I got two points for driving without a seatbelt today. I was driving from one shop to another 500meters away in town so I didn't bother putting the belt on. Anyways some hawk eyed guard spotted me and pulled me over for it. She asked me for my license and took down my car details then handed me back my license and said I would be getting two points. She was a woman of very few words, she didn't mention that I would be fined or I would be getting notification. Do I get a letter in the post or do I pay it straight away, whats the story?.

get someone to monitor your post for you - you can leave the money (€60 for seat belt i think), so when the notice comes in the post someone can pay it for you. otherwise, if you are away for the 3 months and you miss the second notice that will arrive, your fine will be €90. and if you do not pay that fine it will be an automatic invitation to a day in your local district court and an automatic incease to 4 penalty points. judge will want to know why you did not make arrangements to pay the fine when you were away and you could get a larger fine along with the 4 penalty points.

    hope that helps.

    What about non-residents.
If someone is just on holidays in Ireland?
He/she can't get it in the post, as they don't have Irish address.
Do they have to pay on the spot fine then?

Yeah, if I don't get it before I leave I will leave the money with one of the lads in the house and tell him to keep an eye out for a RSA letter with my name on it. The RSA sends it out, right?.

No demand for payment on the spot but their local postman at home (where ever home may be) would be tasked with delivering the paperwork if it ever gets issued. I imagine most recipients then file it safely in the rubbish bin.

    Heh interesting.
In most EU countries, whenever you get pulled over for any traffic offence, if you don't have an address in that country (you are not resident) you have to pay on the spot fine.
Seem like Ireland is losing a good bit of revenue here.

True, and if payment at the roadside is not allowed, I imagine the inconvenience of being deviated from your intended route to the nearest cop shop to pay the bill is often worse than the fine itself.

The fine is issued by the Fixed Charge Penalty Notice Office - not the Road Safety Authority. I don't know if there will be any identifying mark on the envelope.
