    Hi Folks,

I am looking at buying a UK car thats already in the country and I would imagine its been more then 30 days here.

Just want to make sure I dont leave anything out when i bring to to the NCT centre to VRT it.

    So i need
V5 (do i need to change this into my own name?)
declaration form filled out by me
    pps proof
    licence
    Utility bill
    Documentation confirming co2 (v5 I presume)

invoice - Here is where I become unstuck, Will they accept the invoice from the irish seller to me (private sale) or will they require proof when it was brought in from the UK even though it wasnt by me?
And if they require this and its more then 30 days can this cause me problems?

I tried calling them a few times but its ringing out.

    Cheers

I could be wrong but is it not the responsibility of the person who brought it into the country to pay the vrt? I know when my mother bought a car from a guy up the country which turned out to have been imported he ended up getting a bill afterwards and I'm almost certain it was for vrt.

A handwritten reciept done by you should be ok for them. they just want the piece of paper does not matter how accurate the info on it is with regards to price and date ect.

Was it brought in by someone who normally would be entitled to drive a UK reg car over here - someone with a UK driving licence and normally resident in the UK - and has subsequently decided to sell it here? Presumably, they would need to contact the authorities in the UK to "export" the car (even though it's physically in Ireland).

If the person selling it is just someone on an Irish licence who brought it in themselves and thus far hasn't imported it properly, don't buy it until it's on Irish plates. Cars brought in with the intention to import have to be brought by the next working day to a VRT centre, and you could be inheriting a world of pain trying to explain why the car has been here so long.

Its not a UK resident who brought it in

No, irish revenue will notify the uk authority after its re-registered they will return the paperwork and it will go down as exported. Nothing for the OP to worry about

Do I need to transferr the V5 into my name first?

No you cannot because you live outside the uk
Just bring it with you to the vrt office for your appointment

Is it not illegal for a private seller to sell an imported car that has not been VRT'd and re-registered here first?

(you are not entitled to sell an unregistereed(foreign) car in Ireland.)

I doubt you will have any difficulty re-registering BUT you COULD have depending on the guy you meet and the humour of him.
Strictly in addition to an invoice showing date of purchase, you need evidence of the date of import.

Were it me I wouldnt buy it unless it was a total bargain or one of a kind that you just HAVE to have.

Correct legit procedure... ;) you and seller drive 10 feet inside Northern Ireland where you conduct the sale, he writes you out a receipt for the time and date of sale and he gives you the full V5 and he sends the export section (and only the export section) back to Swansea. ;) You then make an appointment within 7 days of the vehicle entering the State and then bring with you the V5 and receipt, job done and 100% legit, everyones happy, especially Mr. Lenihan :D

Don't change the V5 to your name and make sure that you trace back previos UK owners to verify it's not stolen and also run a HPI check, it's high risk buying a car from someone not names on the V5.

I thought you needed permission from the revenue.

Btw did you get a new motor.

not quite the correct procedure. the seller gives you the ENTIRE v5C .The export section is only for a UK resident and registered owner exporting a car themselves.
