Boxing for Fitness - Similar experiences?

    Hey there,

I started working out (mostly running every day) and sorted out my diet about 5-6 months ago. I noticed the weight falling off me. I'm training for a marathon so on average I run about 12k 5 days a week, however I did notice my body starting to adapt to this. The weight loss pretty much stopped. I wasn't gaining anything but I wasn't losing anything either.

It was then that I decided to take up boxing. I started private sessions (one on one) and I do 3 of these a week. After a month I can safely say that all fat I wanted to lose has dropped off me. Considering the plateau with weight loss from running only, I have to attribute this to the boxing. In the first few weeks I would literally be exhausted after each session. Whereas after running I would bit a bit tired or out of breath, after boxing my entire body ached. Muscles I didn't know I had were sore at the very start. I never realised that boxing was such a good workout and really did help me with my weight loss.

Has anyone had similar experiences? I'm going to keep boxing now and training for the marathon next year. I'm also considering going back to the gym as well. Surely I'd be a beast in a year or so hehe.

When I was mad into boxing, I always wondered how boxers (especially the middleweights) had such amazing back muscles. I didn't think that chin-ups alone would develop their backs to such a degree, especially their mid-back muscles.

Then I went to a few boxing lessons, did a few all-out rounds on a punchbag and found out. Yowch! Combine that with all the various styles of press-ups boxers do and you have an amazing upper body workout.

Agreed. It really helped strengthen my back. I have back issues due to a car crash years ago so I was kind of worried but it has been fine so far. My phsyio has noticed an improvement as well.

Out of interest, how much did it cost for the one on one. Did you have to go to the gym for it?
My work is all over the place so it's hard to commit to a regular time on a weekly basis, but it sounds like you got great benefits from the training. I cycle everyday and have lost a fair bit of weight but there is a bit of a belly hanging around that doesn't look like shifting...

I did some private sessions (Muay Thai) a while back with Paddy and would highly recommend him.

for people that hate cardio its probably the best option going-i despise cardio but me and my better half take turns on the focus pads and its good craic and very effective too.
back when I did BJJ and kickboxing I had a 6 pack and I wasnt even trying to get one-then again 2 3hr sessions per week plus gym 3 times a week and a physical job could have that effect with most people :D

I pay €100 for 4 lessons which isn't bad because each lesson is between 60-90 minutes and I get lots out of it. I get more out of it than people who go to group lessons to be honest with you. I arrange them at a time that suits me as my job is kinda mental so it works out nicely. I don't have to go to a gym to do it either - it takes place in the trainers house.

Just tried the link it's not working.
I tried it at the start of the year for a few weeks, Jesus it was one hell if a cardio session. Great for stress relief too, used to just lash out at the bag!
