A fellow across the road is getting rid of a diesel 2004 75 to get a new 3 series...

I've always liked the 75 design, its in excellent condition and is even black...

But is it a car best avoided, can you still get parts? would people laugh at me?!

Why would you care if people would laugh?

Anyway, a few boards members have bought them, or the similar MG ZT, and I've read nothing but good things, especially about the diesel.

Here's a few other threads with lots of info:

Well it's a BMW Diesel engine which is well thought of and they do come in a very nice spec.Personally I think they're a great car

Not at all, there's nothing to beat motoring along in a 75, feet warm in a pair of slippers, puffing on your pipe and listening to the BBC on the wireless (at a sensible volume, of course).

BMW diesel with a turbo that doesn't go pop. If it's an auto all the better as the clutch is apparantly expensive to replace on the manual.

In a bid to cut costs later models were not as well insulated as older models but should still be pretty good. Why not if the price is right?

I was seriously thinking about getting one of these. I do savage miles and 'kill' cars. Used one for about six months a few years back. Engine is excellent BMW lump, parts not an issue at present. Great comfort especially if its a high spec - leather and lots of toys model. Rover built ones actually better than the BMW built units. I actually think the pre facelift model (two round headlights each side) looks better. Have a bit of an ould man image such as op suggested but can be got for small money. Depends entirley on your 'image'

Some people might laugh at you but most won't. I'd buy it if it were cheap but I wouldn't brag about it either. Nice that it had a BMW engine but it doesn't make it one..

If the mileage is reasonable I'd buy it, I would not be too concerned about what others think.

Cars can often get overlooked for various reasons, bad reliability, poor interior, lacklustre engines, boring styling etc.

I think the 75 is an exception, it has a great BMW diesel, a nice jatco auto box, some really nice equipment levels, individual styling, great comfort,

Best of all, its ignored by the masses in this country seeing as its British, and rover as xe konw it doesn't exist any more.

My next car will either be an mg zt or rover 75 loaded with toys, I won't care I'd people like it - I'll know I'll be driving the best kept secret in cheap motoring!

I'll let the sheep keep buying octavias and pissats :P

There is nothing wrong with the Rover 75. I still maintain to this day that it is an excellent car that deserved so much more and reckon it makes a very shrewd buy.

The Rover name was included in the sale of Land Rover to Tata, that's all.

But the Chinese bought all the designs and manufacturing equipment to form Roewe.

Yes they did, I'm not denying that.

I'm well pleased with mine, auto is best, if it's had a recent clutch all the better, if not factor in €700 plus labour for a replacement at some stage.

Really love mine, if you do get a diesel, immediately get the crankshaft pulley and both accessory belts changes straight away. They go eventually, and you're as well off to do it when you take ownership.

Also, wire up the pre-heater. All the diesels have one, they're not connected up though. When you do wire it, you can have the car warmed up before you get into it.

Do you mean the webasto heater? If so, they were deleted from diesels during the project drive period. So later models don't have them

As already said, the 75 is a very good car. If you're worried about parts etc. you could give K&C garages a ring. They are the offical garage for the MG TF LE500.

    Rimmerbrother.co.uk for parts.

A great car, very comfy, reliable and parts are all available apart from the chrome surround for the V8 grille.

I'm told it can be sourced from China if you have good connections

Parts should not be a problem. X-Part (google them) were one of the major suppliers to Rover and continue to supply the motor trade with MG/Rover parts.
They don't have any agents over here although Charles Hurst (N. Ireland) is an X-Part stockist.
As others have said, go for it...
