Need a root canal

I've been told by my dentist I need a root canal, he's referring me to a specialist as he says he can't do it, because the xray doesn't show the canals of the tooth. This specialist is about a two hour drive each way from where I live. I'm wondering if it just this particular dentist who can't do it, or if I really should go to a specialist. What are your opinions on this?

It's just the long drive putting me off at the moment as I'm a nervous patient. I think I'll get a second opinion from another dentist in town & see what they say.

A good general dentist will always refer problems that are better treated by someone else, this is a sign that your dentist is good and thinking of your best interests. A specialist endodontist will do the best job. You may have to go twice but even though its far away the chances the tooth will last for many man years. Hell some people will get on a plane for crappy dental work ;)

My father paid 300 ish euros to get his dentist to do a root canal, in the same year I needed one and paid 800 for get a specialist to do it. He had to get remedial work done on that one by a specialist, at the same time he got a second root canal fixed that had give him 18 years of pain, he’s also spent that Christmas in misery due to a massive infection caused by the poor quality root canal. Think he as a new dentist now.

If I were you I’d get it done and pay the money, mine was done in Dublin took 3 sessions as she wasnt happy with one of the roots - she was good and I've had no problems since. If you want the name PM me. Has it been explained to you that you will need a crown at some stage if it’s a back toot. I’m thinking of going up north for that.

Yeah I have a good relationship with my dentist, and I trust his judgement. Do ye know of any specialists in Sligo or close by? I understand I have to get a crown too, it's really only the travelling bothering me. Hopefully I can make it past Christmas without it :o

He probably has a guy he know and trusts his work, it's not something I'd take a chance with. If you are in Sligo ask him is there is anybody in Enniskellen he would recomend, that would take an hour off
