New car for Old man

I'm looking for a new (used) car for the auld man, the thing he has at the moment is falling to pieces so if I can find something decent then I might be able to persuade him to part with his cash.

The following would be on the requirements list:

4 door saloon - its only him and my mother but they bring the grandkids around a fair bit, so easy access for child seats etc necessary

Diesel - I would say he wants a diesal this time around, consumption would be a fairly important factor

Milage - the car must have low milage - high milage would be a no go

    Manual gearbox preferable

Road use - the majority of his miles are short spins on country roads, its rare that he would use it for more than a 25 mile trip

Brand - he would have no affinity to any particular brand but would prefer a german or a Japanese car. VW BMW etc would be good. I don't think he'd venture towards the French manufacturers (he doesn't rate them as well built)

So now to the important bit, the cash. I think if i can find the right car then he would part with 15-16k, but it would have to be a good car.

What do you guys think I can get for that kind of money in the current market given the criteria above??

Mr grandfather owns the Nissan Note, Never given him a days trouble and has plenty of room inside. Great driving position and it has a solid gearbox and its very easy to manoeuvre.

Ive driven it personally. and although the exterior styling isnt to my taste I really cant fault it, and the driving position is ideal for some one of that age. Good head room, high driving position and good posture.

They do a diesel version although ive no experience with it.

As with anything. Test drive, test drive test drive ;)

Year old Focus Saloon? The driving position is pretty high for a car in the class, is spacious, decent boot (although opening is a little narrow), economical, well built and specced if you go for Zetec up. Just tell him Ford Europe are German

A Volkswagen Passat would be a good car for that money you could even pay less for a older model which are just as good as the current ones

You won't get a new diesel corolla for under 20k

WIth a 20k budget the possibilities are huge.

Second hand, the world is his oyster for that budget

new he will have to register it before the end of the year unless he goes with Renault

Nobody knows if the scrappage scheme will be extended and with the way things are going its hard to know if it will be extended even if there are positives for the government

Surely old man + 4 door saloon = Mercedes?

Should be able to get a lovely E Class saloon for 15-16k.
