    Hi all,

I have this photo belonging to a family friend. Their dog died recently and they realised that this is the only picture that they have of their beloved dog. I can empathise with them as my dog died a few months ago, but thankfully I have loads of pics.

So I wanted to do whatever I could to help them. They know I know a bit about computers and asked if I could do anything with it. I tried my best with photoshop and picassa but just couldn't get it to look right.

Unfortunately it is taken from a distance and was on a disposable film camera. The pic has been scanned and I have cropped it to size but there are some blemishes from the scanner and it just needs to be sharpened up a bit, maybe the light needs to be increased.

If anybody could please do something with it and clean it up a bit, I and the family and kids who owned the dog would be most grateful. I don't think it would be much work for someone who knows what they are doing, unfortunately that someone isn't me.

Thanks for taking the time to read this...

Here's a version that I ran through a Dust&Scratches filter, a slight levels adjustment and some manual healing for bits the filter missed.

The image is so noisey that there is no point trying any sharpening really, you'd just be highlighting the flaws more than anything.

If a person more patient than I were to manually go through it taking out each flaw one by one with the healing tool instead of a filter it'd probably be a better final product, but you're not gonna squeeze much more out of it than this.

Here's one that I also ran through a noise reduction filter, but the problem with all these filters is that they can only to so much to distinguish between flaws and details we want to keep, so overall it's gonna look a lot softer.

Thank you so much! That will do perfect! I'll get it printed up and I'm sure they'll be delighted, I know there wasn't a lot there to work with to begin with.

You're a legend for taking the time to do that, I really appreciate it. Didn't really think anybody would, but thought I may as well chance my arm!

Cheers guys, thanks a mill to you both for all your help.

Think I will print out all 3 a few times and let them take their pick!

Me too, that's why I agreed to do it because my own dog died and luckily I have tons of pics. It's strange, he's an old looking dog and there was only that 1 pic. And it wasn't even a pic of him, I had to crop him waaaaay out of the background!!

Anyway, he lives again!! Sort of...

Don't worry I won't take any credit for your work. Good people like yourselves are what makes boards.ie such a great community and resource. Thanks again :)
