Not looking for medical advice- looking for experiences of recovery from Arthroscopic surgery with the meniscus trimmed away. posted this in the fitness forum but since i'm a runner i might get more replies here- the mods over there approved this once its sticks to stories of recovery and how long everything took.....

i got this done two weeks ago- and i was wondering when people with this probelm went back to playing football / training. How long before they where pain free- when there swelling went down completely?

Did anyone ever have have problems even when they got the op?

    Thanks

I had that same Op in March 2008. I'd say I was back to full strength within 4 months, though i was doing absolutely no sport at the time (I just followed the physio excercises). I Imagine an athlete would recover quicker.
I only took up running in 2009, but I haven't had any problems with it since (touch wood).

Had the procedure on my knee in July. Followed the exercises religously, was walking*/cycling in week 5, started running week 7/8. Built it up slowly from there, got to 75% fitness fairly quickly. Running well now but still not 100%, expected it to be better by now, considering going back for another MRi to see how it looks now.

Football will be different due to the twisting/turning, would not be confident to do that even now. Everyone is different and recovery depends on any other complications at the time of the injury such as damage to ligaments and bone bruising.

    Good luck.

*Note: I walked out of the hospital after the surgery but started some longer walks then.

There are lots of different experiences out there:
e.g. Joan Benoit ran a marathon 17 days after her arthroscopy and I think qualified for US olympic team, Grete Waitz won the NY marathon 3 mths after hers.
On the other hand Amby Burfoot (of Runners World and Boston Marathon winner) "ran" the Athens marathon in 6 hours, 5 months after his op.

Google these while you are sitting with your knee up and if you start feeling sorry for yourself read Keith Kelly's "Kelrock" blog for a real runners experiences with real knee problems.

Take your time getting back into running dont let physio rush you. I had mine done may '09 took my time and did dublin full that october, still get pain every now and then but that could be old age.

Had the same op in November 2009 (anniversary in 3 days).

Followed the physio plan religiously for 8 weeks. The strength exercises worked very well.
Went back to club training first week in Jan, at about 50% fitness.
Back to full fitness by March. Ran DCM 2 weeks ago in a PB.

Some niggles in the same spot not and again but nothing major.
