need diesel particulate filter changed on my 2006 730d, bmw dealer wants 1,700 euro to do it! nearly died when he told me
all i went to the garage was to get the parking light changed (tried to do it myself but failed) - they have to remove the bumper to change the bulb, what a laugh and want 200 euro!
    so nearly 2,000

anyone know a good mechanic with BMW diagnostic equipment (laptop etc) who might be able to do this?

think its time I ditched the main dealer now

Try maxwell motors in Blackrock. Ex BMW dealer, might be a bit cheaper

    That is, truly, shocking.....

The lads in MKW motors they have all the latest Bosch test gear.

Unit A6 & A7 Kingswood Bus pk Baldonnel rd Baldonnel 22 Co. Dublin

    Internet: http://www.mkwmotors.boschauto.co.uk

    Phone: +353 (01)4595266

They have sorted out plenty of problems that main dealers struggled with and for a lot less.

try ac car sales or chelmsford motors, might even be worth pricing up north...

The filter itself is €1100 so you might save a good bit on parts & labour up north.

This thread subject is the very reason why I refuse to buy any car from the late 90's onward.
Rediculous price for a bloody filter. Could buy a decent car for that money, and have change left over. :p

The world's gone mad I tell ya !!

This really pisses me off - remove bumper to change a parking light???
They are one step away from sealing everything apart from the doors with "warranty void if seal is broken - no serviceable parts inside" stickers. That's ok with a €25 DVD player, but anything you pay real money for should have simple things like bulbs easily accessible.

Very broad statement imo. I drive a 97 starlet and its cheap as chips to run.

The beauty of older cars is that you can fix some/most issues at home in the driveway, but that's just the farmer in me talking.

its possible to remove the DPF, talk to Joe @ http://www.chippedire.com/

He can do it for most diesels.

This is the trouble with all these low emission diesels, EUR156 tax but comes at a cost of at least EUR1k every 100k to change the dpf

I know of a good, cheap mechanic, but he is a general mechanic, he doesnt specialise in bmw or have equipment... OP let me know if you would like to have his details.

OP, the DPF can be cleaned!

You should not have to replace it.

Here is one link. There are others:

    http://forums.5series.net/topic/94725-diy-maintenance-for-the-dpf/

When you get it sorted: You car needs a good hard burn from time to time to keep the DPF clear - max RPM, e.g. 3rd/4th gear on a quiet M'way. Lots of DPFs get clogged from crawling around in traffic jams.

    Hope this helps.

As Frank said earlier, go to MKW motors.

I've used lots of BMW "indys" with big reputations, and not any of them had anywhere near the skill level of MKW.

Keith is a very good mechanic.

I agree, on the flip side from your example, I run a '93 850CSi and some of the parts that I might "want to" change are from €3-6k worth.
Being greeted with "Rear Transaxle Failure" , "Brake Assist Inact." and "ABS System Failure" in the morning is both amusing and scary.

What he really means is he wants to only drive basic low end cars with no ABS or Turbos.

I didn't realise the significant of the d and filter in the title.

I came into this thread thinking it was an air filter and a bulb.
I really thought the world was ending!

    thanks for the posts lads

found a place in belfast with an ex BMW mechanic, he asked me to leave car with him next week for half a day and he will suss it out and let me know what needs done - he has the bosch diagnostic equipment.

im more upset at the 200 euro to change the frigging parking light than the diesel particle filter!

hopefully it will work out cheaper

i might buy the filter myself from the net as per previous post

Does the blocked DPF need to be physically removed from he car? Or does the ECU just get tricked into ignoring the readings from the back pressure sensors/ oxygen sensors in the exhaust, i.e. a remap of the emissions warning system.
Ive customer with a similar problem. As far as I can tell, no company in Ireland sells spurious DPFs for the 730d.
