Is this unique to Limerick City?

I have lived in Cork, Galway and Dublin city and never noticed this. I have also been lucky enough to travel quite a bit and have never noticed it in different countries/cultures.

What I have noticed in Limerick City is that you never pass a coffin, you always let it pass you. so for example, I am driving and on the opposite side of the road is a hearse, I will stop just before the hearse and let if pass me.

I have noticed this more and more of late, It's one of the things I like Limerick for, the respect that is shown toward the dead and a grieving family.

    Anyone else notice this?

This doesn't happen all the time either. Have seen more Funerals where cars on the opposite side haven't stopped than have. Slowed down maybe but not stopped.

I have seen it all over the country and even in Cork, Dublin & Galway.

Although people in Co Galway burns fires on the side of the road for when a wedding passes by.

can't say I've ever heard of it or even seen it that I've ever noticed - I don't stop if I'm driving on opposite site of road. I would make sure not to get inbetween the hearse and first few cars. Travelled around alot too in Ireland and overseas and haven't ever noticed or heard of it.

I always stop and let the Hearse drive by me.. It probably annoys the cars behind me though..

Always stop and turn off the engine of the car. Its a common thing around the country

lived in Limerick all my life and this has always been the case in the city.
i thinks it a great tradition, makes all these people who drive too fast realise that we all end up in the same place and its just a matter of time before you get there.

I'm a bit confused. So, if the hearse is on the same road as you, coming towards you, you stp the car and allow it to go by you, before you continue your journey?

I've never heard of this. What do you do in the stopped car? look at the funeral? head down? flick through a magazine?

Just curious. Never heard of this before.

I'm sure if you're religous I imagine you'd say a prayer. I'm not, but I stop regardless out of respect; If in uniform, I'll salute.

I have never seen it happen personally and have never done it. I have turned off my radio while the hearse is passing though, out of respect.
Lived in Limerick all my life :)

Living in limerick and have done this quite a few times.

Just a mark of respect to the families at a sad time rather then flying by only takes less then a minute.
