I recall reading that you can dupe a server into thinking your in eg. UK and can then view UK sites such as BBC.

    Any info/suggestions re same?

Pighead uses this, works a treat! Just download it and you're set.

Read up a bit on proxies, that's how you trick them into thinking you are in the UK.

A good free option is to use the Tor network. The easiest way I've found is to download a browser called MGeni and use it with Vidaliia tor. If you google these you'll find them. To use you just open Vidalia, launch MGeni and it allows you to chose where you want your computer to appear to be from. It certainly works for BBC iplayer and it's very user friendly.
The Tor network ,as it's free, can be over burdened so it can be slow and a little temperamental at times.

Another option is to use a VPN. It's not free but it is very cheap and very easy to set up. There's no install, it's just a question of clicking a few boxes and entering a password once. After that you're set up and it's only a matter of clicking it to turn it on whenever you want to browse from the UK let's say.

I use BlackVPN and find it very good. It was very easy to set up and I don't know much about these things so it was good. You can also use it to view BBC etc on your iPhone or iPad. If you use a referral code it costs €5 for three months for access to the UK or 10 euro for 3 months for global service. I use that because it let's me look at hulu etc in the US. If you want a code mine is XTDWFXA and the address is www.blackvpn.com

as can the people providing the service if they find you raping their bandwidth for streaming video

at least with proxies you aren't intefering with peoples privacy

all assuming you aren't doing anything illegal like watching TV against the right holders wishes

I've just tried this, and while it works, it does seem to prevent my torrents from working. I mostly use ToR, as described in another thread here, this applies the "pretend to be in the UK" bit just to one browser. Hotspotshield would seem to do things to any net connection from the machine.. Also to be noted, if you have any hostsfile entries to block adverts, both ToR and HSS render these inoperative; I've just seen some ads on boards.ie pages that I've never seen before while trying HSS just now.

you can get the vidalia TOR browser, very handy when you want to have the proxy on one browser only, and have another regular browser open
