    Hello All

    I just bought a PS3 80g secondhand for my bro for xmas. It has about 20 movies on the hard drive which he will be delighted with. Can anyone tell me how I can download more movies to the console. Can I just download them to a UBS device from a laptop and install them in PS3 or can i copy them from A DVD onto PS3. I have broadband and a laptop so could i download movies from some site and then transfer to PS3. Sorry for all questions but I am totally clueless and any help would be greatly appreciated

    it depends on the type of external hard drive or usb stick. i had a wd external hard drive and could transfer stuff to the ps3 but i got a new one(hard drive) and couldn't. if the ps3 picks up the device when you plug it in the chances are good.
    once the device is connected go to the icon. do not press x. press triangle for options and choose display all. if your device is compatable you should see all the content of the device and should be able to transfer to the ps3.
    if it doesnt pick it up then you have to format the device and partition it differently which is long and very easy to fcuk up the device.

    Does the external harddrive come with the PS3. All i have is PS3 console cables and a joypad - i dont see any harddrive or USB stick.

    Thanks for your quick reply

    no you only get an internal hard drive. you might be able to connect a pc directly up to it over usb but i have never tried it. i know if you download a program called vuze you can link the ps3 and computer over a wireless network and transferr any data using wifi. there are a few ways of doing it. try a usb stick first if you have one.
    if not you can try downloading * *. but the ps3 and you pc/laptop need to be connected to your wifi.

    Ok thanks. So i will buy a USB stick first that sounds the simpliest?

    1 Then if i download a movie on to my laptop can i just save it on the USB stick and put this into PS3?
    2 Or do i have to change the format of the movie so it will play on PS3?
    3 How many movies can a USB stick hold or is there any particular good brand of USB stick i should buy?
    4 Is there any good free website where i can download movies from?

    Sorry for all the questions - as i say i not really up to date with ps3

    Hey JOHNPT, I use a 500GB external harddrive with my ps3, which are going for fairly cheap now got mine in argos for 90 euro with a free 2GB usb aswell.. I just plug it into the usb and go to the video menu, press triangle and display All and you can watch anything thats supported :) The harddrive I got though won't work with the playstation as it was ntfs I think but I changed it to FAT32 easy enough using free software. ps3 only supports certain formats try avoid mkv and use mpg or avi you can find if you google it. As for how many movies you can store on a USB stick, it obviously depends on the size of it.. most movies come around 700MBs so take you can guess

    1. Thats the general theory yup. depends on several factors though.
    2. Some media files won't play on PS3. The ones that will, according to sony are
    Sony wrote:
    * Memory Stick Video Format
    * - MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
    * - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
    * - MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)
    * MP4 file format
    * - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
    * MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)

    * AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts)
    * DivX
    * WMV
    * - VC-1(WMA Standard V2)
    3.Amount of movies depends on size of stick. general guide is 700MB for DVD quality, 4GB for HD quality. never had any problems with usb sticks so I'd say buy any one?
    4.ehhhhh we can't answer that

    a movie is generally 700mb so a 1gb stick would do but i dont know if it will work with the ps3 it has to be partitioned in a certain way (fat 32 i think) so try and find out will it work with the ps3 first before buying one.
    if your looking to download movies then i would say download * * anyway as it allows you to download torrents off a website called * * which is a safe site to download off and you get to see what type of files you download before downloading them. i just remembered if you have a ipod you can put the movies onto an ipod and then onto the ps3 using the same method as the usb stick.

    sorry not advertising site will take it down

    * * cant say those names in fear of being banned but you can pm me if you want them

    Hey JOHNP,

    1. Download a movie from the net onto your PC\laptop
    2. Create a folder on the root level of the flash drive called VIDEO
    3. Copy the movie across from your PC into the VIDEO folder.
    4. Stick the flash drive into the PS3 and goto Video - USB and your movies should appear!

    Note - there are some file formats that the PS3 can't read, but most should be fine. See post above for more info.

    Hope this helps man!

    I have an old 160gb ext harddrive, must be a good 5-6 years old and if I wanted to transfer a few movies to my PS I'd use that

    if its just a particular one that I downloaded Id use my spare 4gb USB stick, few quid from Argos, does the job

    if you are having any trouble just give it a quick Google, plenty of sites offer advice on it
