looking at buying a commercial 4x4 that comes with seats. the guy selling it doesn't know if it was a UK car before it was commercialised and i want a passenger vehicle.

I want to know if it was an import so i can assertain if there is VRT to be paid on it when converting it back to passenger.

is there any easy and free way to find this out??

Speedo will be mph only or mph in large text and km in smaller text.

One way that is a tell tale sign but by no means certain is if the car has a very high reg number eg. 00-D-103569, which was a year in which over 100,000 new cars were sold in the Capital. The imported reg would be towards the end of the number lineage unless of course it was imported new early in the year.

Another sure fire method, does the interior smell of breakfast roll or Cornish pasty?

Won't the old UK reg be on the log book if it's an import?

correct, section J.4 on the back of log book shows the vehicle previous reg number.

What county? did you import new or second hand?

I've noticed some counties like KE or CE with low numbers but definite imports.

The only way you wouldnt have to pay vrt is if the car was at some stage regd as a passenger version. I dont know what import or not has to do with it.

yeah, i do think they are sequential numbers though so maybe there were only 3000 cars registered in Laois that year and 410 imports since?

    Edit-

Leon is a nice car too :D

Just pay motorcheck or mywheels or whatever €6-€7 and it tells you if the car is imported.

Being from the UK is a red herring. If you convert a commercial to a passenger then VRT will be liable whether it was first reg'd here or the UK.
If you register it as a passenger then convert it to commercial, then convert it back to passenger, the VRT is already paid.

VRT is not due if the jeep was originally purchased in Ireland as a passenger vehicle. A lot of Irish passenger jeeps were convert to commercial jeeps by the second or subsequent owners to reduce the motor tax.

It is important to know if it was purchased as a Irish or UK vehicle before conversion as Irish jeeps are not liable for VRT (It has already been paid by the first owner)

If it has been imported into Ireland or UK as a commercial, VRT is due as soon as the OP converts it back to a passenger.
