    Hydrogen gas exploding, more than likely.

    Had you it charging before you used it, or did you jump start it?

    Indeed extended charging is typical to build up the hydrogen gas, a faulty overcharging alternator will also cause this, it will boil the battery and then any little thing will set it off... Can give a nasty burn if you're anywhere near..

    I always wondered why you have to connect the '+' terminals first and then the '-' ones when jump starting. Intuitition would tell you - earth everything first. It's to avoid causing a spark and igniting the hydrogen. :rolleyes:

    According to this anyway;

    made that mistake on a van that had no colours or visible + or - on the terminals. big bag and smoke. nasty job. battery acid everywhere.

    had a pretty red face after that one!

    No, just started as normal running about 20 minutes

    That's why I asked gave 110 yo yo to day for new battery and don't want a repeat, will put a multi meter on it to morrow or maybe get an auto electrician to check the alternator

    when connecting a battery or jump leads (+) on first and off last

    the reason for this is if you short circuit to ground when attaching the plus lead ,(spanner hit the chassis , body etc) you will do not harm with the (-) lead disconnected .. open circuit , you wont do any harm if you s.c the negative to earth

    thanks for the replies, I am a long time on the road and this is the first time i had a battery blow up

    will get the alto checked to morrow.

    It's more than likely the regulator as the alternator is always putting out the same charge and it's your regulator that controls the amount of charge the battery gets;)

    Indeed I suppose that's what I meant.. aren't all regulators inside the alternators now ?

    Hi bbam, They sit on top of the alternators or dynamos(old style) but alot of the older machines have the regulators fitted anywhere that is handy. A new reg should be got for no more than 30 - 40 euro.
