If anyone has any experience doing round the world, is it better to go with a tour operator like usit or would it be better/cheaper to book own flights visas etc?

I did mine with Trailfinders and it worked out great. Price around, but even if you're not going with Trailfinders, call into them or ring them. Everyone who works there has done a similar trip and you'll come out with tonnes of valuable info.

Something to think about is go to www.roundtheworldflights.com and consider getting the cheapest RTW trip and travelling the rest overland.

Sometimes cramming in more stops means your on the go so much you cant really enjoy the places!

Thanks for that. When traveling to these countries do you have to sort your own visas out, or do these operators do it for you?

You have to do it yourself. It's not very difficult. For my 15 months of going through 20 something countries I only needed visas for Australia (to work) and India. Look up projectvisa.com (or .org, not sure) and you can see where you'll need visas for.

USIT and the likes can organise visas for you, but charge you a bomb.
