Can anyone help me????????i replaced the fuel pump in my 90 mk 4 a year ago and just went to leave the house this evening and the car wont fire. i cant hear the loud hum the pump normally makes when you turn on the ignition. There is no fuel coming at the filter and i checked the relay which seems to be fine. The cut off switch is also in the right position in the boot. Can a pump go just like that?? Wreckin my head

Is there fuel in the tank?

Have you checked you've power at the pump? Use a multi meter or a test lamp/bulb. Could be as simple as a bad ground connection or a loose wire.

Theres fuel in it but the pump is built in to the tank.how would i test it?

Have you checked to make sure you have power going to the pump at the tank? Remove the the connector block and test to make sure you have power going to the pump.
If there is power well yeah as you said the pump has had it.

Can you plug out the wiring going to the pump? How many wires are there?

You should be able to pop a test lamp across the two heavy wires. If it lights up you have power back there and the pump must be faulty.

hey, if you dont have a multi meter the best way to check the fuel pump is to remove the line in at the carb or injection system and turn on ignition, if you get a short burst of fuel your pump is ok

If electrics ain't your best subject then I suggest you let a mechanic look at it.
The connector block is what should plug into the pump, i.e. that have the wires to power it. These you need to check!

defo sounds like the pump considering you cant here it anymore and your not getting fuel from inlet, before you change anything check the fuses they can always get ya.

Could be a fuse, but yes he does have a problem with the pump whether it be power, a fuse or a knackered pump.

it could be a lot of things my man, if its not firing you need to check coils leads plugs, crank and cam sensors also maf or map sensors, if you cant check these you need to get mechanic with diagnostic equipment. if you have multy meter i can explane how to check

Disconnect the wires on the pump cut out switch in the spare wheel well. Connect a bulb between the feed wire and earth. Switch on the ignition. The bulb should light for about 5 seconds and go out.
If it does, the pump is the problem. If it doesn't, you have trouble elsewhere. Such as a faulty pump relay or a badly fitted aftermarket immobiliser system

Read through the thread, he has stated its a fuel issue and nothing to do with coils, plugs or map sensors. The car is 20 years old.

OP if you are unsure what you are at have a mechanic check it, But it could be the pump but also the pressure switch.

Pressure is vacuum controlled on those cars. The pump just runs continuously when the engine is running. When the pressure exceeds a certain value, a vacuum valve dumps it back to the tank.
