I also wish to raise the matter of copyright in the music industry. I have been in contact with the editor of Hot Press magazine and Mr. Paul McGuinness and I indicated that I was interested in pursuing this issue in a serious fashion.

This would most likely be in relation to the three-strikes laws that Paul McGuinness and the major record companies want to bring in here.

I really like and respect David Norris and would love to see him as President, but this worries and conflicts me. He's obviously just been fed one side of the story, but there's no-one to counter the bull**** that the big four music labels spread. IRMA and their associates have been lobbying the Oireachtas, using false information as Paschal Mooney found out. They're misleading politicians using made-up figures to implement legislation that only serves to protect their outdated business models. The EU parliament have been vehemently against three-strikes; voting against it three times, bringing in a directive (which Ireland must comply with) that protects Internet users' rights, and adopting a resolution denouncing three strikes and the secret ACTA negotiations.

Copyright exists to foster creation and appreciation of art, the likes of IRMA seem to confuse it with a right to make money. They were threatening to sue the Irish taxpayer for losses which they attribute to illegal downloading. They are as ridiculous as they sound.

I know protecting Irish artists is important, and illegal downloading is definitely wrong, but the way the multinational music companies are acting is certainly the wrong way. This isn't about protecting vulnerable artists, this is the major labels acting like vindictive bullies trying to punish the Internet for their own failures.

I wonder what David Norris's opinion is on IRMA being allowed to dictate to ISPs such as Eircom how they should censor websites from people.

I'd be surprised if anyone in this country knew much of anything about Norris' policies. He seems to be widely accepted simply for his charisma, intelligence, and articulation. I'd personally hate to see him with the presidency, but if it's a race between him and Bertie I think he'd win unfortunately. I guess it's personality over policy in Ireland, but politics is like that everywhere.

the op was about music copyright issues and the freedom of the internet not david norris's policies

    my response is

if it is bertie v norris i hope norris embarasses that clown ahern

as far as this particular issue, i totally disagree that internet service providers should have to monitor users traffic and report the habits to anyone, and luckily the irish and european courts agree with me so it dosnt really matter what paul mcguiness and david norris think on the issue.

    :)

Oh, and I'm almost certain that this thread is about Norris' policies regarding internet censorship. I simply added my opinion that I don't think many people are aware of his policies, choosing to judge him on his intelligence and charisma alone.

i dont actually think that people are aware of the policies of any presidential candidate for the simple reason that it dosnt mater. the presidency is a ceremonial position with very little actual power

I'd much rather see Norris as President than any of the others. It does matter that he is being influenced so easily by these kind of people, but our President is a position more about charisma and diplomacy than about political decisions.

As President he won't be able to open his gob on the likes of this.

Would this affect anyone's vote next year? I posted this on reddit and a few people said they would withdraw their support of his presidency.

Isn't Norris involved in the whole arts and literature background. Alright, maybe one can't download Joyce or any other work Norris is an expert on in the same way as music, but I don't see anything too odd or inconsistent with the areas Norris has an interest in.

No doubt if it effected literature and the like as hard as music, Norris might have been out in force against Eircom

On a lighter note, although U2 have excellent material, the last two albums, they should be paying people to even spend 10 minutes to listen to it. Then, there will always be people out there that will by the brand, sorry band, no matter what. Sure McGuiness is worrying about the little fellas
