I would normally think they should delay the jailbreak and release it after 4.2 is out, but isnt this jailbreak supposed to be
a bootrom jailbreak and therefore apple cannot stop it with the existing hardware?

is it possible for a non developer to install this?

On the iphone you had to be a developer to get the beta, or some dev's on ebay were selling the option to go under them as part of their dev license so you got to install it that way.

Yeah, you could probably install it but you would need a developer UDID to activate it. Otherwise you'd be left with a bricked iPad. Wait for the GM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

Bah! The GM won't be out until about a week to 2 weeks before release. I want now!

    What native SMS?

The iPad 3G baseband had provisions for SMS sending.

Rilly? Wish they'd give us the SMS app then and stop being so ornery and US-centric.

Its possible for a non-dev to install the ipad 4.02 beta now, If you download the beta, then in itunes select upgrade with shift held down and select the update and it will load 4.2 beta onto the ipad with no bother.

Ive mine on the beta now and seem's ok - mine is wifi only model, heard the 3g models have some issues with the beta.

Can roll back to 3.2.2 if needed in itunes as apple are signing it only.

Anyone know if there are plans to allow tabs in Safari ? I find the current system of multiple tiles good for the iphone but cumbersome for the ipad.

Give Atomic Browser a try - it has tabs. I doubt Safari will get them any time soon.

Am loving 4.2 on the ipad, really needed the folders on it.
    Also seems quicker.

Friendly which is a facebook app also does not work, there are some apps i had that were only IOS4 from my iphone and now they work on the ipad which is good.

iPad 4.2 Beta 2 is up now. Installed it this morning. Haven't tested the apps that were giving trouble but will do so and report back.

Edit: ABC Player, COD: Zombies HD and PressReader all still have the same errors.

Is beta 2 available online for download? Don't have a sec account but have 4.2 on my iPad already as I downloaded it from a torrent site

Yeah, thanks for that. I just bricked my iPad. You CAN'T. If you're not a developer you get a message saying this device is not registered as part of the iphone developer programme.

I'm using a Mac. Anybody any ideas as to how I can get my iPad back?

You didn't "brick" your iPad.. hate when that term is thrown around so liberally! :D

Do a simple restore in iTunes... and it should put on the latest released compatible firmware.

I wish I could but I can't. Any time I connect the iPad to iTunes I just keep getting the same message saying the device is not registered.

So at the moment, it's as useless as a brick. :p

Did you try a forced restore?

Put it into DFU mode first..
    1. Connect iPad to computer
    2. Turn it off
    3. Hold down power and home button for 10 secs
    4. After 10 secs release power button but keep holding home button
    5. iTunes should detect the iPad and allow you to restore it to 3.2.2

And then try the following (from MacRumours):
    1. I did the click option and choose a 3.2.2.ipsw
    2. All apeared to be fine
    3. After it was done, recieved an error from iTunes(1015)
    4. iPad was stuck at the good ol itunes/USB screen.
    5. Tried Hard reset, soft reset, nothing seemed to work.
    6. Everytime iPad came back up into Itunes/USB screen the iTunes onthe computer wanted me to restore.
    7. Finally got a hold of Umbrella, and "kick" the iPad out of recovery mode.
    8. iTunes then restored my backup from 3.2.2 back onto iPad and it works just fine now.

First option worked perfectly my dear, dear friend. It's restoring as I write. Really appreciate that.

I shall never again so flippantly use the term bricked :D

And I'll never, never mess about with betas again!!

    Thanks again

Where did you get your beta from? Mine worked perfectly as did others.
You are totally wrong saying to have to be a developer.

I got it from a link I found browsing around, but it's a legit copy. I followed the instructions as per your post (had to modify it slightly as I'm on a Mac) and it installed flawlessly. Then as soon as it rebooted, I got the message saying the device was not registered as part of the developer programme. I've googled it since and apparently this happens every time a beta is released. Non-devs get their hands on a copy and mess up their devices (note the way I avoided the term brick there).

By the way, I don't doubt it worked for you, but I wanted to warn people because of what happened to me.

So out of curiosity, what do you think happened? How come it works for you and not for me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,475 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

well i paid some shady individual over the interweb $10 so that my device id could be registered under his dev licence until the official release

    :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,464 ✭✭✭jamesd

Was it beta 2 you got online I wonder?
Don't know what happened with your install - very strange as the site I got the procedure off had done a few upgrades with no bother.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭jakdublin

Yes, it was beta 2. But I've been looking around and thinking about it and I might have figured out what went wrong. On PC you select upgrade but on Mac there's no upgrade, it's either update or restore and I've a feeling I picked restore which is the wrong one. I was in a bit of a hurry out earlier, so it might be down to my carelessness. :o

Despite me saying I'd never mess with a beta again, I'm going to have another go later now that I know it's reversible. :D

Will you try the non beta 2 version as thats what i used.
Will i pm you where i got it from?

Ya i think it was the restore that caused the issue as i did update.

    Pm sent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭jakdublin

Looks like I have a result

Downloaded from the link you sent, updated instead of restoring and it seems to have installed OK. Don't have it in front of me now as I installed it remotely from work. I'll double check later when I get home.

Yep, it's up and running. Big thanks jamesd

I love 4.2. I can organise myself much better on it. I have about 100+ apps installed, all on one screen. Tis great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,464 ✭✭✭jamesd

Found a link for the 4.2 beta 2 , anyone chanced installing it? Should I try and upgrade using it too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,464 ✭✭✭jamesd

Tried updating 4.2 beta 2 on top of 4.2 beta but it put the phone into restore mode , i kicked it out with umbrella so its now working still on 4.2 beta 1.

Wonder do i need to restore back to 3.2.2 and then update to 4.2 beta 2 ?

Airplay and air print is in beta 2. Think I need to load iTunes 10.01 and retry

I've got print. Won't work though. Airplay only works with Airport Express at the moment too.

No no major improvements - still would like the challenge of getting it on though.

4.2 Beta 3 released. Available from the usual sources. I don't know if this will work on non-dev UDIDs (if you don't know what that means, you shouldn't be updating!) so use as your own risk!

Have you tryed it Chris? Much differances?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

I've installed it, but not really seen any differences. I know that PressReader and ABC Player still aren't working.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,464 ✭✭✭jamesd

My press reader opens fine and allows me to read fine, what's the issue with yours?

4.2 Gold Master is out. You don't need a Dev account for this. This is pretty much always the final version on the firmware, so this will (more than likely) be the final version that Apple will release officially in a couple of weeks, as long as no massive bugs are found.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭jakdublin

Do some googling - Im just downloading it now along with itunes 10.2 beta.

Have you installed it? Hows your wifi after it as have read some issues with wifi on the GM.

    No problems with wifi here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 406 ✭✭akadesign

Heard rumours that this maybe released tomorrow, I know apple don't divulge that type of information, but has anyone heard similar info since the GM has been approved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

it's usually a week from the GM date.

tbh 4.2 on iphone is nothing to be writing home about, few new ringtones, search in safari (really disappointed with the implementation of this) but that's really all there is to write home about for iphone.

for the ipad however, it makes the device about 1000 times more usable.
