The official scrappage as I understand it applies to new cars only. A dealer may talk to you about 'scrappage' on your car but the reality is that he doesn't want it so I wouldn't even bother mentioning it.

Put an ad. up in your local shop or on any of the free websites like adverts.ie to sell your car but don't bother bringing to a dealer unless he already has 10-12 year old cars on his forecourt which is unlikely as there's feck all money that he can make in that vintage of car plus as a dealer he's supposed to be selling cars with some class of warranty and selling 12 year old cars with a warranty is asking for trouble.

Send it through the NCT and see what needs fixing. If they are relatively cheap fixes then get them done and sell the car privately. If it costs alot to get it NCT'd then sell the car adjusting the price accordingly. At least if you have the fail sheet when selling it you show a potential buyer what needs fixing. A back street mechanic or someone in the trade might be interested as it might cost them less to get it NCT'd than Joe Public.

A garage will give you next to nothing for it, as already mentioned they would make very little profit from selling an almost 13 year old car. Trading it also means that you cannot negotiate a better straight deal on any new car you buy.
