Science Nuig?

    Hi everyone,
I'm really interested in doing the undenominated science course next year in nuig. I would either specialise in Zoology or Earth and Ocean Sciences in 4th year. Is anyone doing this course or know anyone doing it and is it good? I have heard that there are no field trips in this course compared to e.g. ucc which go on one every year?? Is this a disadvantage to the course?
    Thanks!:D

Undemoninated is an incredibly vague course. I can tell you that the school of microbiology here is awesome but not much more than that. The course you are looking at is spread across many departments.
There are lots of facilities for earth and ocean sciences. If you're serious about ocean science blatently look at unis that are by the sea.

I hope you're not an English graduate ;)

I did Undenominated Science (Anatomy). I know a good few who did Earth & Ocean and Zoology, all really liked it. I think they do field trips though, I remember my mates going on them.

Ive done undenominated science and it's a brilliant course if you have an idea what you want to do. You could keep doing both those subjects up to 3rd year and then pick your favourite for your final year. It's a super course like that and it's not at all vague if you look up the information you need. It's all on the website and the course coordinators are a sound bunch who do read their emails. There are also denominated courses if you know for sure what you want to do.

    hope this helps,
    good luck!

Is there many fieldtrips in the course because I've heard there's none? Was this a disadvantage did you think?
Also whats the maths like...i'm doing OL maths for the leaving?

Field trips I'm not sure of. I think there's maybe one in 1st year and I'm sure there would be more as the course progresses. As I mentioned, email the course coordinator.

The maths is fine. I did OL in the leaving as well and did really well in the maths in college. They cover a couple of things that would be in the higher level leaving cert paper but it's fine!

You can be caught out in first year with subjects you've already done if you've taken OL in the leaving. The standard is somewhere between OL and HL, but a decent OL plus a bit of work and you shouldn't have any difficulty.
There's always the incentive that you won't ever have to do maths again...

The maths stuff I did when I took science (back in '04/05) was above HL leaving cert, but the scope is (I think - been a while since I studied it) narrower, and there is a good deal of assistance if you are motivated and willing to look for it.

Actually this is true of all the subjects I took.

If you like science and want to learn, you'll like undenom @ NUIG.

If you think its easy and underestimate it, you'll leave in third year with a general degree like everyone else.

Like anything though, if you develop a passion for something - you can really nail it and make your degree a springboard for bigger things. You would be surprised as we're all in a sort of bubble during undergrad, but NUI Galway is very well respected for its degrees in the biosciences in the UK, Rest of Europe and elsewhere.

Not a bad choice if you want to do science...it all comes down to you at the end of the day! :)

Im in third undenominated, doing zoology this year, had intended on doing it as my degree but the wonder of this degree is that you might take up a subject you never thought of taking up and really like it. for me i took up physiology in second year and I love it, now I plan on doing that next year instead of zoology. I think its a great course, plenty of different options available!

Can I recommend straight Earth and Ocean Sciences? I know a few people doing it. It's supposed to be a great course. One of the girls I know was doing Undenominated Science (the course you're interested in) and switched to Earth and Ocean Sciences in second-year because she found Science too vague and uninteresting.

I'm in first year denominated EOS. We'v already had our first field trip and are planning our next one in the new year. As far as i know i can take zoology in 2nd year! Hope this helps!
