I'm after getting a few bob (approx 500-650) my way for a computer, but my boss has to approve it as he's in charge of the money. Basically I have to try and convince him that a laptop is better for me, as opposed to a desktop which would be stuck i the office 24/7. I don't really have a clue what one to get something thats fast with good memory to run bioinformatic programs but nothing too pricey.
Any help would be much appreciated
    :D

    what the deuce is that!?!

if you're going to be using a pc to figure out complex stuff, you'll need to focus on having a decent processor. While it's not difficult to upgrade a processor later on, it's will be much harder to do than the RAM or hard disk would be.

The advantages of laptops are being able to work from home, out of hours, etc. That might appeal to the boss, but you may regret it after a while. Different for everyone, i like being able to leave most stuff at work!

That's exactly what i was thinking. If it were me i'd rather leave my work at work, and not have to take it home with me.

Get a desktop, the minute you start doing work from home after normal working hours it will become a bad habit and do you think your boss is going to pay you extra?
