so the indo has decided despite there been a recession and always telling us to tighten our belts the irish people can find another 20c to help the bean barons profits.
now i'm not against fair price increases and cost of living wages etc.. but this is one of the most profitable papers in europe and yet despite deflation they increase the price by 8% to copy the sunday times price increase and barely mention it on their cover.
i for one haven taken the advice of the indo about wasting money etc and saved 2.70 a week which is 140euro a year and spend it on something worthwhile.

Out of interest, just what are it's circulation figures like? Almost everyone I know has nothing but contempt for that rag.

So you criticise Sindo but not S Times for it? I don't know why anybody would buy Sindo in the first place, plenty of other better papers. Its circulation is more than 265,000

I would have some critism for the times but it is loosing money by the bucketful according to the latest reports so they have some justification at least.. the indo is highly profitable with I seem to remember Gavin o reilly at one of the recent agms saying they had profit of 16% on the average paper?

anyway thats just my personal opinion... I know others would have different ones.

S Times is losing money because the editor spent a fortune overpaying some staff to join. Was it the Phoenix that said Liam Fay was on a six-figure salary for two pieces a week?
Not having a go but because of his mistakes the editor hikes the price to pay for them but you say it's okay cos it's losing money?
usually when one paper moves on price others follow and i think you'll see the same again with other papers in coming weeks.

As you can see from the figures provided, assuming they are correct, then your friends are obviously buying the paper despite their contempt for it.

That's a pretty massive circulation figure BTW. Plus as of Jan 2010 they daily version was enjoyed over 144,00.

Thanks for that, but the figures are correct - and every time I post figures here.

I appreciate your concern that they may be bogus, you'd never know who's behind the avatar. I could be residing in Kildare, trying to prop up the share price!

They relate to Jan-June 2010, which is tragic given the 'fast paced environment' of the print industry.

We (royal) will all have to hold our breath until Feb 2011 to find out this months sales. Any paper affiliated with a uk parent does a monthly audit, which is the only way of conducting business.

Liam Fay was on a six figure salary? He should have been on about 250 quid a week for that output.

Surprise me if the Phoenix doesn't use this pic as a cover next issue:

Caption competition would just be too easy, wouldnt it?

But are they ? I've seen it asked before, and asked myself, but never got a concrete answer. Does the Indo include the number of 'free' copies given out in their circulation ? I never buy it, as it's blood awful, but in every hotel I've stayed in you always get a free copy on a Sunday morning, they were given it away free at the Dublin marathon expo a couple of weeks back and I've seen free copies in DIY stores.

If they do include the free copies their ciculation figures are bound to be wide of the mark.

I'd not expect promotional material to be included. I'd only expect sales.

However, as a free sheet [Cork Indo/Cork News as example] that is not sold CAN obtain circulation figures from a certified printing company ~ so who knows, that might be a way of getting a combined figure.

“Free” – wouldn’t be allowed according to the ABC if you have a cover price. Sold at ‘Basic Cover Price’ have to be revealed and then papers sold below the BCP - their discount ie above or below 50% for the BCP.

Every paper is allowed to do this under the ABC rules but many do not use this scheme. Some, it would have to be said, are bordering on abusing it.

For genuinely free papers Metro, City News etc they fall into a different cert: Verified Free Distribution. This is where the number of papers given out each day is audited. It has to be independently verified.

Getting the figures from a “certified printing company” or indeed the publisher would be as sincere as a kiss from a whore!

Gbee: one of the papers you mentioned has a “ABC VFD” figure for its free distribution and then also claims a figure of “12,000” Bulk distribution “Publishers Statement”.

Seriously, what’s that, why isn’t the 12k audited like the other figure. It would cost no more to audit the ‘bulk distribution’. I see thinks like that and the alarm bells ring.

Anyway, I digress. Attached are the ‘sales’ of the Irish papers and the level of bulks in each case. Makes for interesting reading.

The Daily Independent was €1.90 this morning. I bet you will hear the usual crap about increased costs to justify it.

Circulation is falling and they are using cover price to keep up their turnover.

The Examiner will be next to increase its price and The Irish Times will follow in a couple of weeks.

Circulation will continue to drop on all the papers.

My God...I've never really read the Indo but that article is a joke. A friend reporting on a friend....

Also, 2.70 for a paper is ridiculus.

No - nothing about increased costs - plenty about collapsing revenues!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,647 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

they never even tried to justify the price increase in the indo yesterday. normally they have a small couple of lines at the bottom of the front page with every price increase citing increased costs etc.. not this time as it would have to read... "Sir Anthony and his son are not happy with the big enough profits and need another 10c from you gullible readers to keep their profits up so cough up... thanks the editor"...:D
