    hi guys,
    I'm Writing for a friend of a friend here....

    Basically he's lookin to buy a 'new' car, recntly had a 01 corolla l.back, but didnt turn out to be as great as everyone had said, burnt oil, needed new gearbox,clutch,injectors,coils, droplinks... and was not great on petrol either then emission sensor things went in the exhaust then he sold it. although all this might have somethinh to do about it being a uk import.(unknown at purchase)

    currently has an 99 golf but its crazy slow and hard on petrol and some things
    are starting to show up in it now stalling at random, stuttering... time to get rid of it!

    So heres the question what to buy; diesel/petrol, mileage varies sometimes long runs sometimes short city runs!
    would be looking for another 1.4 maybe possible 1.3 has to be reasonably big (not a yaris) maybe a diesel but high tax and insuarance (only 24)...
    focus:have heard they're a bit sluggish
    astra:soft engine with gasket problems
    corolla: has had bad experince, but might just be that car.

    has seen a 2001 avensis in a garage for 2.500, 98.000 on the clock, 1.6, bit of nct...

    what would you guys recommend about avensis, reliable, economical..

    or what sort of car would ye recommrnd at all, sorry about the really long post by the way.
