    Hi all,
Looking for some advice on the pros and cons for proposed wall build-up's for a closed-panel timber frame I would like to use. I am leaning towards the .14 wall but not 100% sure about the foil... any thoughts?

    Option 1:
    - Breather membrane
    - 9mm OSB
    - 140mm timber joist (400 centres) filled with Warmcell 500
    - Moy Vario airtight vapour barrier
    - Actis Triso Super 10 foil insulation
    - 38 x 63mm battens to form cavity
    - 12.5mm Rigidur plasterboard
    - U value: 0.14

    Option 2:
    - Breather membrane
    - 9mm OSB
    - 225mm timber joist (600 centres) filled with Warmcell 500
    - Moy Vario airtight vapour barrier
    - 12.5mm Rigidur plasterboard
    - U value: 0.18

    Hi Majormac,

I have just completed a self build. And looking at your details of your 2 options. I would keep the 225 stud and also keep the service cavity from option 1. You can insulate your service cavity with rock wool and bring down your u values to option 1 with this.
By keeping your service cavity you will be protecting your membranes and airtight layers should you go that way .

I am currently living in kildare and am just about to move to my new home across the country. If you feel i can be any help i would be glad to comment on my experiences. pm me if you need anything.

    Thanks homewardbound11,

Not too concerned with service cavity, will have conduit factory-fitted for electrics in external walls...
All materials in both options are certified IAB, BBA etc except the foil. Is it too big a risk to use a product that has not been certified yet?

That Actis foil is not worth putting in.
No certification, agrement or anything else.
    Forget it.

I'd go for option 2, with insulated services cavity. Dont underestimate the ability of plumbers and sparks to damage your airtightness. Also if you look at the timber frame panels, you can have 3 studs at the corners and 2 at the header, this becomes a cold bridge, the insulated services cavity covers the cold bridges to a degree.
