    Hi guys,

Sorry if i'm posting this in the wrong section.

I'm currently building a house and we are coming to the wiring stage and would love to have some home automation in the future, but at the moment i don't think the "funds" will allow.

So my question is what cabling etc would you recommend to put in place at present to serve future automation. Not looking for anything major, basically remote access for lighting and heating etc.

Is it a case of just running a cat5 cable to each light switch etc and returning to a central hub??

    TIA

Have you considered what system of home automation you might want?
Cat 5 from comms, to alarm panel would allow for X10 via Sig Net220 giving remote access via its web server. X10 devices can then be added by using the existing mains cables.

    Thanks for the reply koolkid.

To be honest I wouldn't have any idea of available systems out there for home automation or how they work, so I'm open to any suggestions.

As I said I'm not wanting anything what I deem to be elaborate, although I'm sure the more I find out what can be done the more I'll want!!

Did a quick google search on x10 there and they seem to be a nice "does what it says on the tin" unit.

X10 is easy enough. Its what we use most of the time. There are others here would be better qualified to tell you about some other systems.

Instacom are a company which do more specialist stuff

You would be better off posting this in the http://boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1018 section. The lads in there would be better at giving advice with regards what cables you will need installed. Getting the wiring correct at this stage will save a lot of work and money if you want to get it installed at a later date.
