I was wondering is it possible to back up your laptop files, video, pictures, music to your PS3, by using the PS3 as a portable device as such. I'm looking to reformat my HD on laptop to clean it out. If this works it will save me a few bob having to pay out for a portable HD.

If you got one of the jailbreak devices for the ps3 you can get an ftp program and transfer files over to the drive on the ps3. Don't think you can do it without one though.

What about transfering to a USB stick (4mb) then loading onto the PS3? I'd need to do this 3 times as I have over 11Gb of videos, pictures & some word files.

Haven't a clue if it would work, but you could take the hard drive out of your ps3,connect it to laptop via sata to usb adapter, back up the files to it, and put it back in your playstation. :)

..I wouldn't think there is an easy (legal) way to do it....

If you have enough free space then you could create a new partition on your hard drive and transfer files to that. Then just (re)install the OS on the first partition and off you go.
