Hi sorry if posting this in the wrong place !!! This is for Graham. My mother has been real sick lately had something on her brain she had been taking to James hospital for scans and had to go to Beaumont hospital for an OP on her head to remove some lump that had grown on her brain. This lump stopped her doing anything at all she could not get out of bed or anything. I have been asked to take her to live with me as a result of this as she has not been eating well an lost lots of weight and speech and can barely walk (I don't mind at all) But now i am being told i have to go on carers benefit i am a single mother of two kids 11 and 3 and receive lone parents allowance living in a 1 bedroom house privet rented with rent allowance . What should i expect now as i am new to this what entitlements should expect if any will i lose my lone parents allowance?? I have had people com out to put a chair in my shower and wanting to put handles on my walls for my mum i am just confused as to how my payment will be affected as Christmas is nearly here. Please can you shine a bit of light my way on this. Thanks in advance, Esther. PS i am not the type of person who will ask questions to someone face to face as i am real shy and just let things slip....

    Hi Esther

Sorry for the extra questions, but could I just clarify that it is definitely Carer's Benefit that is being discussed and not Carer's Allowance? If so, can I take it you either are working at the moment or you were working in the past couple of years?

You can receive half rate carer's allowance with your One Parent Family payment. Your one parent family payment won't be affected at all.

Hi Niki06 - you said you're in private rented accommodation getting rent allowance - has the landlord allowed his shower to be changed and handles put in? Just asking as my friend isn't allowed to put up a shelf unless the landlord firstly agrees.

    Hi deelite

No my landlord has asked me not to let the handles go up on the walls but the chair is is just plastic with holes in it and is not fitted to anything so that's ok if your friend puts the shelf's he will damage the walls with holes and could lose some of his deposit

    hope this helps

get letter from your mothers consultants.apply to your local council for proper housing.with your mothers condition you should go on priority list for a three bedroom house.your benefits for lone parents will not be affected.not up to date on carers allowance, but i know you are entitled to some.plus the council will put in all those extras for your mam.best of luck.

u are entitled to half-rate carers allowance on top of lone parents.. this is not taken into consideration againt rent allowance.. you also need to apply for the household benefits.. this is 40 ish a month off ur esb bill and 20 a month off ur phone.. they will pay u 20 a month into bank if ur only phone is a mobile.. and the 40ish into bank if your not with esb.. otherwise telecom and esb take it off bill before they bill u..u will also get a free tv licence and perhaps a travel pass.. u should apply for the annual respite grant which is 1700e paid the first thurs in june each year.. this is yours to do with as you please to help alleviate any pressure you have from being a carer... u can holiday or pay bills.. whichever helps u.. u can also work part-time - 15 hrs a week only - and stay on carers and opfp.. your rent allowance would be affected tho.. now after all that - god only knows what will be changed in the budget so apply for them all and u'll get them.. whatever the new rates will be..
