Dell hard disk password issue

So I got this nice new Dell Optiplex 980. Only one problem - when I added a secondary 2TB hard disk, the BIOS began demanding a password to unlock it. There is no way to set or unset this password in the BIOS, you seem to only be able to do that for the primary HD.

Dell's online tech support chat thing was, unsurprisingly, no help. Anyone have any advice? Or have Dell got to the point where only "approved" parts can be used in their machines?

(also, the drive obviously works fine in other computers, with no password required or set.)

It might or might not be the cause of the issue, but 2TB is one of those special limits where old standards have to be redrafted to cope with new tech.

It's possible that the BIOS or SATA controllers firmware is hitting a bug due to an old assumption that drive size is less than 2TB.

You should have the option of enabling and disabling hard-drive passwords on both drives separately. In security.

Also, Dell should be able to provide a bypass password.

Seems the hard disk was just faulty. Oh well!
