Up on betfair now. Some savage odds. Really good odds on lads like meb and americans and kenyan espeically mutai and this young lad gilbert kirwa. 206 loads of times. They seem to think geb will win, not so sure!

They are only good odds if you win;)
    Haile will win though.
love this race-two of the finest athletes ever going head to head and neither giving an inch.Must be the greatest night of athletics ever with Cathy Freeman winning and Sonia going so close.

    What odds for Pena?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 174 ✭✭clubcard

Just checked, the odds arent really up,well not properly.
Most of the men trading at 6-1 so I wouldnt say any value there with Haile a shade under even money.
All the womens field at 2.00 so as I said odds arent really up.
    Id check on Saturday...
Looking forward to see how Ritz goes though, think it's his first marathon since breaking 13mins for 5k.

It's a 280% book! Probably the worst prices it's possible to imagine.

Wait until Saturday night when the market has settled and there is liquidity there. A couple of high street companies should price it up too.

Fully disagree. Most people at 6 to 1. to have lads that can run 204 as 60 to 1 is crazy and 9 to 1 for a 206 fella on mulitple times. I agree at themoment a lot of value is curently not there but this will change massively on saturday. But there are loads of bargains currently up there.

Its only a bargin if it comes in.. The word bargin and betting doesnt always go hand to hand. I can see only 2 possible winners of this event but then again its a marathon so things can go very very wrong for a bargin.. ;)

Back against Haile top 3 on Betfair.
He doesn't do races without pacemakers, they'll burn him off by 15m.

I'd take that bet from you, The 37 years old to win against the kids in a pure race :)

If he wins I'll be forever in awe of him as it's a tough course for a tactical race, the complete opposite of what he's used to.
I can't see it though, there are dozens of young lads from Kenya/Eth lining up and going under 2:08 on undulating courses these days, while fighting it out without the aid of pacers too.

Yep hope he proves you wrong, its the way marathons have gone that they have been after times rather then races over the last few years. Olympics would have been a great race had he been there.

Possibly, though i am of the opinion that he dodged the olympic marathon to avoid lel and co, using the pollution as an excuse, then ran the 10k instead, where he was well beaten. Wanjiru is the best marathoner in history imo and haile wouldn't have lived with him in Beijing. I would fancy Haile this weekend though, at 6/4 or better.

Seriously??? The guy destroyed everything thrown at him on the track for years and years - tactical, time trial, sprint finish he won them all.
You cant say he's not used to tactical races. He's run more tactical races than we've had hot dinners.
For better or worse he decided to chase the marathon WR in a very controlled fashion. He might not have ran many tactical marathons but then again that was not his intention. But he's clearly said that he's out to win NY rather than go after a record so its a different ball game now.

Wanjiru is amazing one thing Haile has over him is track smarts, I think that can been seen from his pacing etc Wanjiru is liable to go a bit too quick early and then somehow mange to pick it up in later stages again. He just needs to be a little smarted in order to take the wr from the great man. Remember Haile wasn't and isnt in his prime now .

Very poor trading with only €79 matched on the New York Mens marathon.

If Haile Gebrselassie is available to lay near his current 2s (even money) then that is the bet.

Fond memories of backing Noguchi at 22s and laying Radcliffe at 6/4 in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Don't think so, to be honest. I think he burnt himself out in Rotterdam last year. Same accounts for Duncan Kibet in the same race. Neither of them has had one good race since then.

British Eurosport at 2pm tomorrow, planning my day around it :) Otherwise you'll see it online, there'll be a link on channelsurfing.net.

Tempted by the 6/4 on Haile tomorrow, i cant see anything to beat him.

I don't know if the pacemakers have helped in recent years. Quite often they have either pushed too hard or too slow to be really useful (I'd imagine the pace car/clock is probably just as useful from a stream-lining/wind protection perspective, and I'd imagine they'll have one in NY marathon too).. He could feasibly run in the pack to 24 miles and then put the foot down. Either way, I wouldn't write him off. His form was top notch in the recent Great North Run (albeit against poorer competition). Age is probably his greatest barrier these days, but we all know what an incredible finisher he is.

New York will probably suit him too, as he's not forced to aim for any further WRs. Berlin was too hot last year, and was the reason he cited for not breaking his own record, but in NY he'll be under no WR pressure.

Gilbert Kirwa is where my money is going. This guy is a stud. Best odds are on him for top 3. Mentioned in letsrun as the guy to watch out. Has ran 3 marathons and won 2 and come second in other and ran 206 twice. THats awesome. Supposedely in Kenya they are pining their hopes on him. Heard he ran some outrageous time at altitude recently for a half i think where he hammered all those other guys racing. You heard it here first Kirwa to win if geb doesnt.
womens is a straight choice between keitany and erkesso

The total amount bet on the New York Mens marathon on Betfair is now only €375 (was €79). It means almost no money bet on this event yet as obviously it is not a popular betting event, or athletes do not bet much, or all the betting will be done tomorrow before / during the race (unlikely).

By contrast "Semi Final Matches / Granollers v Simon / Match Odds" has €3,923,571 bet - a tennis match that started at 19:00 today.

I have a balance in my Paddy Power account but when I log on.

    Athletics Betting Unavailable
Sorry, we currently do not offer betting on Athletics

Its not worth the effort for them to compile odds on athletics events as they will do no business. They will have a cost of hiring athletics odds compilers, but have no trading volume and no profit.

I'd encourage anyone here who has accounts with PP, Boyles, Ladbrokes or anyone else to mail in and request a market. They will price it up if they got a couple of requests.

EDIT: Powers offering a market now.

If you don't have eurosport, seems like you'll be resorted to streaming on line and it seems like this is the option......$5 with universal sports. Or one of those jumpy crappy streams.

Not quite the way round I wanted it, but will do...

Marathon on Eurosport via SkyPlayer on the XBox and then F1 on the laptop via iPlayer, will probably stick the driver tracker on another laptop as well just for completeness.

That's me sorted for the afternoon anyway. :D

Haile got his excuse in early I see, you wouldn't see Sammy at that.
Seeing he has since retired mayb he was forced\coaxed into running ?
If he had a problem it was his pocket unwilling to take the hit of a no show.

Brilliant performance by Gebremariam, the cross country stood to him no doubt, finished like a train.
Poor Kwambai was done for once they hit the park, not enough power for such a course.

If my memory serves me right SAMMY had a dnf this year in london..........If he was injured he was injured. A legend. Nothing to prove....Why didnt sammy take him on in berlin ?? We will never know. In fairness he is 38 so he deserves to retire. Will be missed though. Glad I ran in two of his races.

He did indeed have a DNF and he said before and after he that he started the race thinking that he would win so he said he'd have a go till he felt the slightest niggle.
Haile went for an MRI as it has been reported ?
Surely that would be a cause for an elite professional to withdraw unless there was pressure on him?

Haile prevented Wanjiru from getting an entry to Berlin in 2009, the dogs on the street know that.
He went to Chicago that same year and beat Haile's time from a few weeks earlier and also it's the fastest marathon in US history.
What about Beijing? Haile always said he though Olympic gold is worth more than any city marathon or record.

IMHO Haile is the better athlete overall (5k - marathon) but Wanjiru will be a better marathoner in time.

Maybe but only because Haile has shown this generation what's possibele.

I listened to Sammi being interviewed on marathon talk (this interview was months ago) , Haile had already committed to NY but Sammi had not committed to Chicago at the time and the question was put to him about NY and Haile and he replied with sth like talk to my agent, so what I took out of that was Sammi didn't want to race Haile and was all talk.

I'd have loved to see them go face to face but obviously now yesterday in New York wouldn't have been the clash everyone wanted.

London/Berlin/Beijing in 08-09 would have been the ideal time as both were at a peak.
