Any help on this one is much appreciated.

I"m BIG into MGs. Got a car recently from the family of a guy that died during the course of restoring it.There was no paperwork with the car,no log book , nothing.I did get a series of photos showing the restoration works that were done. One of these photos clearly shows the reg.plate affixed to the car before it was dismantled.Information I got from the family, was that they believed the car was assembled in Dublin. The car is an MG YA or YB.Reg no
    ZE 9231.

I contacted the people in Limerick to find out how I could get the car back on the road after restoration is complete. "Dont have any record of this car, its not on our system".They suggested I contact Dublin tax office. The tell me they have no record either. I"m directet to go to my local office and apply for a new reg. What I want to know is ---- Am I entitled to ask for the origional reg no to be resurrected , or do I have to take whatever no the decide to allocate to me?.By the way, these cars were built between 1947
    to 1952. Any ideas anyone???

Thats a 1950-51 Dublin number by the looks of things. This is from wiki.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_Ireland
Dublin CC (until 1952): (in original issuing sequence) IK Z ZE
NB A duplicate series of IK for cars and motorcycles existed prior to 1921. IK 1 to IK 9999 (Dec 1903 - Mar 1927); Z 1 to Z 9999 (Mar 1927 - Sep 1938); ZE 1 to ZE 9999 (Sep 1938 - Feb 1952). In February 1952 Dublin County Council and Dublin County Borough Council set up a joint motor taxation authority. The joint office was administered by Dublin County Borough Council. See below for subsequent issues.

Is it possible that the pre 1952 numbers are not on their system?

So you might need to find out where the archives for these registrations are. One of the better places to do research in Dublin in the library and archives on Pearse St.

On the other hand you might try one of the vintage clubs that are around the country, I'm sure this is not the first time this has cropped up.
