Black Tie Event - What to wear?

    Hey guys

I need a bit of insight here :) Would a cocktail dress be ok for black tie? Or is it strictly long length gown type dresses? I presume it would need to be dark/black? I've no clue! I can't really afford to buy anything new at the moment, so I'm heading over to raid my friends wardrobe tonight. I do have a black River Island dress that I got for a wedding that might do the job, but it's kind of plain really! My friend has a lovely black dress I could borrow too, but it ends a bit above my knee - would that be too short? I get paid 2 days before it, so if all else fails I'll go buy a dress especially, so I'm open to suggestions!

If any of ye have links of examples I'd really appreciate it! :) Thanks!

A cocktail dress is fine for black tie, just don't wear anything too short! I had an event recently and was debating what to wear too. I went for a knee length black dress in the end and was worried I'd be the only one not wearing full length but it was fine :)

oh and it doesn't have to be black. It's really only the men that are restricted in what they can wear

I've been going a bit mad on ebay lately and there are a lot of nice dresses evening dresses included, that might be cheaper than a new shop one. Since you're broke like.
Also if the dress is plain remember you can always accessorise, nice fancy wrap/bolero or something

Ok guys... defo getting one of these, I just don't know which!

I am in LOVE with the blue one, but I think maybe it's not formal enough?? I'd love any opinions :) I think if I get a black one I'll end up getting the blue one at Christmas anyway if I have the monies and it's still there!

    Thanks!

Honestly, I think the blue one is just a wee bit too short and a bit too casual looking (it's a really nice dress though) :(. The 2 black ones are lovely, and will look great glammed up with some heels and accessories

I was thinking that myself, a few people have said the one shouldered one so I think I'll do with that! :) Just hoping I'm not the only one in a shorter dress!

You won't be, loads of women wear shorter cocktail dresses these days.

How do, sorry for hijacking the thread but I am looking for advice on what a male can wear to a black tie event as I also have one coming up. I don't have a black suit, I do have a nice grey suit though, is that a no no? I can also source a black tuxedo but is that then over kill? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Excuse my ignorance, last thing like this was my frickni Debs
