I have to get a set of new car mats for my B6 Passat as normal ones won't fit under the pedal arrangement on the car.

However VW want about €75 for a set to fit properly

I'm still waiting on a price for the wheel nut cover remover which I'm sure will knock my socks off when i hear it.

Anyone know where i can get a proper set cheaper or does anyone have a set they don't need.

    Maybe try vagdrivers.net.

Some dealers on there and will probably do discounts. On seatcupra members can get 20% off and free postage from one of the dealers. UK prices too so another saving on Irish prices:)

Would they be right hand drive?

    Try mrcarmats.com.

I bought a set of mats off them last year and they fit perfectly and were much cheaper than dealer.

Will they have the reinforced pad for the drivers heel?

THe drivers mat is a funny share. Afaik the passenger one is much bigger.

Passat has a floor mounted accelerator pedal, so the driver's mat is a funny shape to fit around this.

Make sure you get anchor points with whatever mats you are getting, otherwise they'll slide around all over the place.

Did you have alook on ebay?

Also take into account that there might be clips built into the floor to secure the mats from moving around under your feet. If so generally universal mats are unless in my experiece.

I bought mine off ebay some time ago, they were tailer made for the S40 including the holes in the right position to fit the clips in the floor. 2 years on and they are still in very good shape. Think I paid about €30 for them.

Just called into Sinnots in Wicklow and now I have a set of black genuine mats on the way for monday.

€50 all in so its not too bad for the exact ones to fit the car I think.

    Maybe I'm mad

If anyone has a thing for taking the plastic wheel nut covers off PM me and we can arrange something using Paypal

I've never noticed wheel nut covers on a Passat before, so just checked an 07 we have downstairs - and there they are (learn something new everyday).

If you have a set of Allen keys and a bit of brute force I reckon you could get them off. Otherwise I'll have a look in the morning and see if there is a spare one around somewhere.

Make sure you check the boot of your car and see if there is one there.

My brother still gets a good slagging after having to call the AA to change a puncture :D

Are the covers not just plastic caps that slide off the nut when pulled?
All you need is something like clothes hanger wire with a tiny little bend on the end. Thats all the real tool is.

Kevin Connolly audi wanted €170 for a genuine set of Audi A5 mats as the grey ones as supplied are not good for winter. I got a met specific to A5 on Ebay for €27. Quality not as good as genuine but perfect for what I needed them for.

That's what I thought, but it's like a Torx or Allen key hole in the middle - must unscrew somehow.

Not sure but I'll look into it.

There should be a removal hook in the wallet with the wheel brace and locking nut etc..
It was the case with my B5.5.

    EDIT

I have a spare wheel nut cover out of my last crashed B6. 50 euro was good for the mats. You wouldnt get that value of a certain reputable car/scrap dealer in your home town John...:p.

Good luck with the motor btw. Did you go for the trendline after.

Haha certainly not, mind you I think he would run me if he saw me coming :D:D:D

Thanks. All the hate for the B6 Passat here is making me think I made a poor choice but I've always wanted one.

Its a 2006 import TDI SE spec. Basically a comfortline with a few extra bits from what I can see, including cruise control and chrome pack. Happy out about that one :)

112k miles with a full service history and I talked to the previous owner (a rep) who said she never had a days trouble with it and it was only sold due to her being made redundant as she refused to take a drop in wages or something along those lines.

Its one draw back is it only has 105bhp but I hope to get it remapped in the new year if I don't go and get a classic car before then

I think they are a slightly different design and require a torx screwdriver to remove

The 1.9 unit dosent give the problems of the 2.0 tdi. Yours dont have the DPF which is 900 euro to replace. The dmf and injectors dont give as much bother either. I have a 07 one aswell(1.9 trendline) with 282k on the clock now with no problems so far..:)

Thats pretty much what the mechanic said who sold it to me, and in fairness I trust him especially regarding VW's.

No turbo issues either according to him. the rear brakes have been checked and greased and the only other issue he highlighted was a steering column failure which unfortunately just happens when it decided to but he has only seen it twice.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,025 ✭✭✭✭-Corkie-

I would say your safe with the steering column. It only gave bother on earlier cars and it would have gone at this stage. I would still watch the turbo though..

Hopefully nothing will go wrong, good service history, appears to of been well maintained anyway and from the condition it had a careful enough owners. I've driven wrecked ones with less mileage.

As I service cars before they really need it I'll hopefully get on ok. :)

Exactly I can't wait for a bit of real comfort on the long trips. The Snorolla is very tiring to drive on a long trip. Nenagh to Gorey last Sunday night. Not enjoyable on the motorway :D

Is the service history with VW? It could prove useful if you run into any troubles. I bought a 2006 B6 estate during the summer 125k kms on the clock, the airbag warning light came on as I was driving home a few weeks back and I assumed it was probably just a loose connection under the passenger seat which had been moved about a bit during the day.

A quick Google turned up that I would need to get the warning reset with a Vagcom so I dropped in to my local main dealer expecting it to be a 10 minute job.

Turned out that the passenger side airbag needed to be replaced but because it had a full VW history VW replaced it on goodwill, would have been about €400 otherwise. Just hoping I don't run into the steering column fault now.

    I wouldn't its not a common issue

I think it has been fully serviced by VW alright

What exactly are the symptoms of a the steering column problem? Is it shared with other models on that platform? I know my Leon had work on the steering column as a recall or something before I bought it.

    Thanks for that EPM.

As regards your earlier question not sure how you'll know but I was told by the mechanic that I WOULD KNOW.

I assume the steering lock comes on as he said its b!tch to free

    The mats or your feet?

The mats dont as they are on hooks securing them to floor
