2010 Opel Gaelic Team of the Year for Football:
    1 Brendan McVeigh (Down)
    2 Charlie Harrison (Sligo)
    3 Michael Shields (Cork)
    4 Philly McMahon (Dublin)
    5 Kevin McKernan (Down)
    6 Emmet Bolton (Kildare)
    7 Paudie Kissane (Cork)
    8 Paddy Keenan ( Louth)
    9 John Galvin (Limerick)
    10 Daniel Hughes (Down)
    11 Martin Clarke (Down)
    12 John Doyle (Kildare)
    13 Daniel Goulding (Cork)
    14 Benny Coulter (Down)
    15 Bernard Brogan (Dublin)

NOMINEES FOR OPEL GPA PLAYER OF THE YEAR FOR FOOTBALL:

    Bernard Brogan (Dublin)
    Benny Coulter (Down)
    John Doyle (Kildare)

It's a far less controversial selection than the joke that was the All Stars.

However, I still can't believe Keenan getting the nod ahead of MDMA (Galvin merits it for me as he should've been on the All Star team).

ya a couple of weird ones but Pa Kelly misses out again.

I think Paddy Kelly's problem is that when he performs, nobody remembers it as he's a workmanlike footballer and lacking somewhat in the flair department that makes the forwards selected stand out.

    Me.

I don't doubt that he had a good year but he was found wanting against Meath and Dublin.

At least Galvin got selected. A far better player than Walsh was this year and practically carried Limerick to within a point of the eventual All Ireland Champions after extra time. About time he got a bit of recognition.

I disagree with the Meath part anyway. He absolutely destroyed us in midfield for large parts of the first half and most of the second half. I'm of the opinion that had he not played against us, there would have probably been no controversy as we would have won easily. He had fantastic games against Kildare and Westmeath as well. MacAuley really only started to perform in the qualifiers.

I thought he struggled against Meath in the first half to be honest.

I'm probably more annoyed about Dublin players being overlooked all the time.

I don't think they were sympathy votes (yes, it contradicts my post above but in hindsight maybe I was a bit rash) but in my eyes (albeit biased towards my own county man, McAuley), I don't think he was in the top 2 midfielders in Ireland this year.

I do too. If anything players would have more sympathy for him than journalists.

I'm not so sure, he was also selected on the All Star team, there might have been a small bit of sympathy, but Keenan is a bloody good footballer who had a bloody good season, overall I think he's there on merit.

aye, you keep banging that drum, sure its not like ye showed any bias against louth in your posting over the summer

sympathy, do you really think players from kerry and donegal really give a shíte what happened to louth this summer?

i think keenan is lucky to be honest, delighted for galvin to get it, he was superb this year, in the most underrated team in the country.

as for do Kerry or donegal players give a s8*t what happened Louth? yes they do of course, when meath were involved. not alot of people like Meath. however, the disgraceful scenes afterwards removed alot of sympathy..

    Banging what drum?
I was simply replying to your earlier question. And of course I'm going to have a bias against Louth, like most decent people I find it a bit hard not to when I think of the sickening scenes which followed the final whistle at this year's Leinster final.

i'm glad too that John Galvin finally got some recognition, he's carried this Limerick team for the last ten years. I would have to disagree with you though that Limerick are underrated. Most teams realise we will give them a good game and dont underestimate us. We've only taken 2 major scalps since '03, Cork and Meath, but crucially neither were in a final! We dont seem to learn our lessons. Several times since the start of the last decade, we've had Kerry and Cork on the rack in the final minutes of games, and have continually failed to put either opposition away. We're stubborn and difficult to navigate through, but most of the top ten teams will always have enough in the tank to beat us.
