    The EC’s Digital Agenda for Europe (DAE) targets are certainly ambitious – a feeling that was echoed at the 3rd Annual Next Generation Telecommunications Conference ‘Delivering an EU Broadband Strategy’ in mid-October 2010:1

    * 100% Internet coverage (‘basic broadband’) by 2013
    * 100% coverage at speeds of at least 30Mbit/s (‘fast’ broadband) by 2020
    * 50% household take-up of at least 100Mbit/s (‘ultra-fast’ broadband) by 2020.

    We could even do
    * 100% coverage at speeds of at least 30Mbit/s (‘fast’ broadband)
    by 2013 if we wanted to.
    But we are unlikely to even achieve the first stage unless there is seismic change in Government policy.
    * 100% Internet coverage (‘basic broadband’) by 2013

    Earthquakes of any significant magnitude are rare in Ireland.

    Well rollout of fibre is the only viable way to reach these targets but of course little ol' Ireland will find a way to dodge these targets.

    The importance of the IoffL plan is now becoming apparent.

    IrelandOffline have been working on a plan to spread fibre out in the "regions" by asking local authorities to include fibre ducting in all civil engineering works, that would include sewerage and roads.
