Ipad 2G

I have been putting a few quid aside in the hope of buying an Ipad. I had hoped to buy one between now and Christmas but I hear the second generation version is due out early next year.

Would you advise me to hold out (I am not particularly patient!!)? What changes do you anticipate in the 2G, cameras etc, or something more drastic and necessary.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

If Apple stick to their typical product cycles, then we won't see a 2G iPad on this side of the Atlantic until May/June next year.

That said, Google are launching tablet at the end of November and there are a couple of Android-based tablets coming onto or already on the market which are likely to give the iPad a run for their money. They're much cheaper too.

The next generation of iPad needs 3 things to stay ahead of the curve:
    1. Higher-res screen
    2. Weight reduction
    3. More connectivity.

If we get to the point where the iPad can be docked and talk to keyboard, mouse & printer over bluetooth, then it can move from the nice to have on-the-move gadget into a serious replacement for a working laptop.

Seamus, couple of things to point out, first of all, odds are we won't ge the same delay this time for the iPad. It'll probably be the same deal as with the iPhone, now that they're producing in massive numbers it'll be easy to do a bigger launch and we'll get in in the second wave.

Android tablets aren't going to be any use until Honeycomb, Google and LG have admitted that. Saying that, the Galaxt Tab is meant to be nice, pity it's not cheaper than the iPad (Although I haven't seen Irish pricing) and has about half the screen space.

It can already link up with bluetooth keyboards and mice and with the 4.2 update with printers also.

But, yea, I'd wait for 2, front/back facing cameras rumoured and probably some other shiny things up their sleeve.

There are many of us in that situation. I believe at least one camera is a given, same with mora RAM (512 mb) and a better processor. Not too sure about better resolution. I believe they will keep that for the 3gen.

I expect an announcement in January with shipping a couple of weeks later.

Anyone telling you when the new iPad is coming is only guessing, some say Jan and others say may. I have an iPad but if I was buying now I'd wait til the next one as I know I'll be selling mine once the new one is released as I'd like the camera for facetime and skype.

While true, I can tell you there's a new iPhone in June and new iPods in September, Apple are predictable, the new iPad will be announced in January, probably launch here March. If you can't wait then go ahead and buy, I'm waiting personally.

    im definitely waiting.

more ram and front facing camera are a given.

would like a retina display and 128gig storage but it's very doubtful.

Retina Display on the iPad would be 2528x1896 (Roughly). I'm putting that in the no column.

Something approaching 1920x1080 would be acceptable!

I am also waiting. I think a camera (maybe 2) and higher res screen are a given.

Also, there has been a lot of rumours about a "smart bezel". Not exactly sure what it is, but could be interesting

Should we ask the mod to put a stickie on Ipad 2g? This subject will come up more and more often as we are about 2 month away of a potential announcement. Also, many of us are expecting it and it would be a nice place to wait together.

Don't think we'll see a second gen iPad until mid to late next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,599 ✭✭✭ScrubsfanChris

The 1st gen Ipad was announced on January 27 2010 and released in US on April 3rd. And we know Apple like to release new models on average 12 months (iphone/ipad/macbook)

The delay in an International release last time was low stock, something they won't get wrong this time around.

Just ask the other half/family member for an Apple Store voucher for Christmas :D

There's no way they'll wait that long. The iOS devices all have predictable announce/release dates, and the iPad has been set at January/April, so that's roughly the timeline we are looking at for the iPad 2. Mid next year will be the iPhone 5, and late next year will be the iPods. Also, there are competitors for the iPad coming around, so an early announcement and release will help kill them off before they have a chance to become serious competitors.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,942 ✭✭✭Danbo!

I don't think apple worry too much about competitors, but a January announcement would be nice.

I've been undecided about it for a long time. I thought it was rubbish when it came out but I had a go of one and it's very nice to use, just too pricey for me at the minute.

I'll probably wait for next gen, hopefully there'll be a price drop, would love to see the lowest model at €399, though unlikely, but when I hear 399 I think 300ish, where as 499 just makes me think 500 quid! I've no interest in front or rear facing camera so I might just wait for the flood of second hand first gens to hit the market.

Can't post the link, but Reuters tweeter this bout an hour ago.
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Inc's next iPad tablet will start shipping as early as the end of February from electronics maker Foxconn Electronics' factories in China, DigiTimes reported on Tuesday.

The report, citing unnamed sources from Taiwan-based components makers, said Apple originally planned to start mass production of the new device, known as iPad 2, in January.

Those plans were postponed since the device's firmware, or set of software instructions that are programed into the device's hardware, was still being tested, according to the report.

The iPad 2 will mainly be supplied by plants in Shenzhen belonging to Foxconn, the parent company of Hon Hai, DigiTimes reported. An initial shipment of 400,000 to 600,000 units are expected.

An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

Apple sold 4.19 million iPads in the fiscal fourth quarter. That was lower than markets expected, but analysts expect sales to ramp up this holiday season as Apple resolves supply glitches.

fecking hate journalists and their sensationalist articles/rumours.

    i can do their job.

iPhone 5 will be released within 207 days.
iPad 3 will be released within 481 days.
iPhone 6 will be released within 573 days.

it doesn't take a genius to work out apple's product release time frames.

new iPad's in end of quarter 1, new iPhone end of quarter 2, new iPod end of Q3, new piles of cash in bank... end of quarter 4.

There's a new assembly line being installed in Apple Cork by all accounts, rumours in Cork say it will be for additional iPad 2 production.

Highly unlikely that anything like the iPad would be assembled in Cork given the nature of the operation there, I'll know for certain this weekend though.

Read the FAQ. They're going to send the winner an iPad 2 as soon as Apple have released it :)

    That's not what they're saying.

They're saying they have an iPad 2 and are giving it away in a competition. The competition is open until 24/12/10 however the prize will not be shipped until the iPad 2 is released.

It's most likely all marketing strategies, I wouldn't say they actually have one. They will buy one from the US as soon as it is released out there and ship it to the winner I'd say!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

This is the wording they've used on their FB page :
Somehow we've just landed an iPad2! Want to win it? Hit the link below and tell us what you want for Christmas. Before the lawyers find us :)

Sorry for the bold, forgot to copy plain unformatted text.

So, they're just using sensationalism by saying on their FB Page that they have it and lawyers will come after them, and saying on their own site something completely different? If they are, I hope an affliction of the itchy kind hits their scrotum soon.

What would convince me to buy the Ipad 2 is if they made it possible to synch your ipod from it (so a USB port would be useful!).

I mainly listen to podcasts but there;s no way I'd sit on a bus listening to an Ipad so the ability to download them on the Ipad then transfer them to the Ipod would be great. If it can't do that, I won't be buying.

Yeah, iPad is reportedly on track for an April launch. Now there are heavy bombing news that Foxconn, will begin shipping the next-generation tablet in Febr. Well, to the iPad 2, Im looking forward to be thinner, lighter, and with the camera, of course Facetime video chat support, Well, the first iPad really make me sucked in videos and movies enjoy, though sometime need the help of iFunia iPad video converter for lack of flash support, I think if have the camera will be cooler and more apeal~

Your site claims that you actually have one, right now. That's what's gotten the competition so much attention. I'd like to see some proof (e.g. pics).

    That ^ ;)

In fairness though, the last time pictures of a still-to-be-released Apple product got leaked onto the internet, Mr. Jobs had the police kick down the dude's door and take it back, so if we do have one in the office showing it would be a bad idea. We like our doors, and wouldn't want to put them through that.

But whether we have one or not is kinda beside the point, the point is whether you want to win an iPad2 as soon as it's legal to own one, and we know our doors will be safe.

come on, nice ploy, and good comp honestly,
but why bother defending it with "well if had one..."
    You don't have one,
We know you don't, they prob don't exist yet and the prototypes are running on iPad 1 hardware
But good comp all the same, ps do i win
