Hey guys. My daughter dropped her laptop and broke the screen but was told by a friend that she could hook it up to her TV and use it as the screen.

She needs a cable so what type should she be looking for?

Sounds too simple in a way so what snags are there?

Is it a flatscreen telly yeah? It should have a DVI or a VGA input and the laptop should have one of those outputs so check which each one has first and take it from there.

Its not a flat screen - one of the older wide screen type with the big bulky back on it. Would that rule it out then?

    See www.svideo.com , connection,info,settings,diagrams,
use svideo cable,3 euro maplins or powercity.
set resolution on laptop, to 720x576 svideo resolution.if theres a yellow svideo socket, use a simple svideo male to male rca type.
google image search svideo cable , svideo interface .
some pcs have svideo port with 4 round holes and 1 square hole, which requires a svideo 5 pin cable with one end ending in a single male rca round connector to dock with the tv svideo in port.
theres also svideo to scart units in powercity , cost 5 euro, set signal, input= in.
i think you mean a you have a old crt tv, most have a scart ,with svideo in ,on the front, or back,
3 rca ports female, round, yellow =pc video svideo in, red ,white = l/r audio stereo in.
use 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio , if you wanna use audio in from pc, 3.5mm,cost 3euro, goes to pc,3.5mm. line out, green, or headphone socket, if theres no line out.

If its not an HDTV youll have a hard time with the resolution. Not that its not doable, I just never found it comfortable or readable. Newer TVs its really that easy: most laptops (and some phones!) have an HDMI port on them, one cable to the tv and you're watching movies from your laptop on your tv.

New laptop screens can be got for under 200 squid. the labor is usually step-by-step, provided by the manufacturer's manual.

Thanks for the replies guys. Doesn't seem like its too straight forward - for me anyhow. A new screen might be the best option.

I'll need to go and look at the TV myself as she wont have a clue.

forget using a laptop with a crt telly, the strain on the eyes would be retinal killing.

get a new panel for the laptop, if you give your location someone on boards could install for a nominal fee. if you are in cork i can do it

if using a crt tv ,set the font and icon size to large or very large, its ok for games, movies, youtube .IF you are on a budget a secondhand vga monitor 19inch is very cheap on adverts.ie, 80euro or less.
