Do we have any idea what the rise in college registration fees is likely to be in the December budget? Have there been any leaks, etc., or is it just useless speculation at this stage?

The rumours are point towards them being raised to about 3k per head. But these are just that, rumours.

They should go up to 5k. People seem to forget that its only students whos parents earn over 41k that pay these fees

Little bit of straight thinking here lads..

Recent official figures show that 50% of people pay no tax at all, due to low income, below thresholds, etc.

What do you want to bet that the vast majority of the other 50% that do pay tax are college educated? So in effect everyone who goes to college does actually pay for it in taxes.

So why the fvck would the government want to prevent people getting educated to the point where they can really contribute to a 'knowledge economy'?

Because this government has NO foresight. Encouraging education in the late 70s and 80s was what gave us the kick start in the 90s. Making education less accessible will prevent people from getting qualified.

Keep 3rd level 'free' - they will get paid back ten times over if they do.

Not to mention it is only saving 80 million, which is nothing compared to some of the other low hanging fruit they could pick...

If you're on a grant you don't pay

Or more correctly you pay and the VEC pay you pay months later.

Ah the local VEC, apply in August and you're lucky to see your grant by December. But that's a rant for another thread

Any sort of centralization for grants is to be welcomed

Thanks. I had also heard the 3k rumour, but like people say, it's just rumour. I was just wondering if anything more concrete was available, but we'll have to wait.

Cowen has refused to comment on the re-introduction of fees, so we'll see what happens.

Standard tactic, you don't rule anything in or out before a budget.
