If it's on one, it's on them all. You mean DTT (Saorview) not TDD.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,818 ✭✭✭Minstrel27

i for one am thrilled with this.

Mullaghanish is also broadcasing it, I just about made out the logo through all the pixelation.

Rescanned my TV and found TV3 and RTÉNL 1, both carrying TV3 with epg schedule. The picture on the RTÉNL 1 channel appears to be softer than the proper TV3 channel, probably lower bitrate.

As RTÉNL 1 is still there could it become a Saorview promo channel?

I rescanned and RTÉNL 1 is gone.

It's not satellite - it's on terrestrial TV - like with an aerial!

Whats bitrate split like now? 4 full SD, 1 full HD loop, rake of audio and the low bitrate NewsNow channel.

Looks good for being able to carry another SD channel when RTE2 goes HD-only

    Right, so when's 3e coming on board?:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 685 ✭✭✭lgs 4

    RTE1 - 1.5Mbps
    RTE2 - 3.0Mbps
    TV3 - 2.0Mbps
    TG4 - 1.0Mbps
    News - 1.6 Mbps
    HD - 6.5Mbps

These figures constantly change, but it's a fair indication.

I hope you had your tongue firmly in cheek when you suggested another SD channel on the mux;)
Though, according to the stats there was 11% of the mux transmitted as empty packets so you could actually squeeze in another one:eek: In the race to the bottom of the quality pile, nothing would surprise me.

When RTE2 goes HD only, its space is empty - there won't be RTE2SD. Thats where they can get space from.

Ive just read that In addition to the DTT Service RTÉ is to launch a free TV satellite service. but I will need a second dish bummer!

Yes - I realised that after I posted, but I still have a big issue with the fact that RTE1 is on reduced resolution (544x576) - as is TG4 and now TV3. I would prefer quality over quantity, but the beancounters in TV land obviously want to squeeze every drop of capacity out of the muxes.

I also have an AZBox. If you have a DVB-T tuner installed,
    Goto; Settings> TV Channel> Tuner B. DVB-T>
Probably best to make sure search mode is Auto unless you know the channel number/Frequency the stations are broadcast on.
If you don't have a DVB-T tuner, you can buy one of these fot the AZBox to avail of the service.

If you can receive the DTT service then you wont need the satellite service. They will be identical in content.

RTENL1 I think...same channel TV3 was on before it became RTENL1. I didnt need to rescan on my LG TV

RTENL2 is the HD test channel

I have an AZBox Premium HD with DVB-T & DVB-S2 tuners.
If you have the Premium+ HD & want DTT on it this option may be available at the cost of sacrificing one of the satellite tuners.

does my TV have to be able to do MPEG4

    my TV has this

    DVB-S No
    DVB-C DVB-C (MPEG4)
    DVB-T DVB-T (MPEG2)

The tuner I'm referring to is for the AZBox Premium+ HD. This is completely independent of the tuner in the tv, hence TV won't have to do any MPEG4 decoding as that's what the AZbox is doing.
I'm using a dumb monitor with no tuning capabilities whatsoever it just displays the signal coming in through the HDMI cable.

    ok I understand now

yes I have the AZBox Premium+ HD

what I was trying to figure out was if I "just" got a new UHF ariel installed
would my TV need to be replaced (the AZBox Premium+ HD would just be for satellite TV stations)

so your saying if I got that card you suggested I would also need the UHF ariel, and the TV would be fine as the azbox is getting the signal and sending it to my TV

Anyone know if there's any issue with the TV3 DTT signal with regards to widescreen-switching? On my main TV (Sharp LC-32FH510S) since TV3 appeared yesterday evening, every time the TV3 aspect-ratio changes from 4:3 to 16:9 or vice versa, the picture goes black. Changing to another channel and back again fixes it.

This problem is peculiar to this particular TV, the STB box on my other TV and the DVB-T tuner in my computer have TV3 behaving normally. Getting signal from Mullaghanish.

Aspect-ratio changes on the other channels have never caused any problems on this TV so it has me completely baffled!
