So Jim McDaid's departure means he is entitled to receive a total of €230,000 between lump sum and so called "Disappointment" money plus his TD and ministerial pensions. Just when I think this country can't get any more insane something like this happens. So, assuming that, realistically, at least twenty TD's lose their seats or retire at the next election we'll be paying out the guts of €5million in "Golden Handshakes" to these clowns? Plus the extras that Cowen will get as Taoiseach. Plus, I suppose, their associated hangers on, advisors, secretaries etc etc will have to be paid off too... Where does the insanity end?

Disappointed? I'm devestated, desolate, woebegone and forlorn... How much is that worth?

WTF.... I initial thoughts were this guy was the proverbial rat deserting the sinking ship to save his own skin...since this government is doomed and there will be an election in the new year. €230k extra for quitting his post. There is no hope for this rust bucket of a country.

It did cross my mind that he jumped ship yesterday to make sure he got his pay day as this might not be available in a few months when others are holding the purse strings...

This government, and the FF-led Administrations that immediately preceded it, are an affront to democracy. It goes well beyond noses in troughs, it is unjust enrichmen at the expense of the people that politicians were elected to serve. Maybe it is time for the IMF to come in, if only to put a stop to the big payoffs and multi-pensions.

And McDaid with his 16% vote attendance record. The mechanisms for transparency are mostly in place, we now need mechanisms for accountability, something entirely lacking in the legislative landscape of Irish politics. Irish people don't make the laws, Irish politicians make the laws, supported by the civil service, and Irish politicians are voted in on the basis of their ability to look after their local area, attend the right funerals and so on. Remove the single transferable vote and motivations change sharply.
