Ford Mondeo problem

    Hi

The Da has a 2.0L 2004 Ford Mondeo diesel LX which decided not to start anymore. He brought it to his mechanic who suggested it was the flywheel and clutch which had been going and somehow caused the starter to also give out. He was quoted €1600 for a replacement.

Now to be honest I wouldn't be a fan of his mechanic so i was wondering what ye think....is €1600 about right or a little on the pricey side?

    Thanks,
    Pyridine

If you don't trust the mechanic don't go to them. Ask people here for someone they would recommend in your area.

What signs was the clutch giving that it was "going"?

Is the car now in bits? can you get a second opinion?

Its is possible that the flywheel is the cause.

As the DMF (dual mass flywheel) starts to break down it emits small pieces of metal (dust) that clogs up and causes the starter to fail, if the mileage on your dads car is in the 70,000 to 100,000 miles range then its about the right interval for the DMF to go.

€1600 is not cheap though, but considerding you need a new starter, DMF, clutch and slave cylinder its not astronimical but not cheap either.

Try and source the parts yourself and get a local mechanic to do it. I got it done for €750 but without the starter in that price.

    Hey

    Thanks for your replies.

Well you're spot on with what his mechanic said anyway. Found metal fragments when he removed the starter apparently. The car has about 70000 miles on it so it looks like we're the unlucky ones at the bottom of your milage range!

Unfortunately the €1600 is the quote from the "local" mechanic. That's part of my problem with him..he's not cheap for an indy by any manner or means. Where may I ask did you get it done? Surely a starter can't cost €800!
If you don't trust the mechanic don't go to them.

Well it's not my car and the auld fella bought the car from this guy and is a little trusting despite my voicing some reservations.

    Thanks again for your replies.

Yes. I've a 2004 mondeo tdci and the dual mass flywheel went at 110,000 miles. It began with starter problems -sometimes working, sometimes not engaging. There was a build up of dust on the starter cog from the disintigrating flywheel. It cost about £650 to replace (including clutch)

Get a second opinion though, some garages just shout "FLYWHEEL" the minute you drive in.

I had one go at 20,000km on a 6 month old 2005 LX Mondeo :) 70,000 miles is not bad at all from one. Total sh1tter though to have to fork out that amount of cash. The €1600 is not really out of the way to be honest, wouldn't be cheap but it's no rip off.

Hi if you want to email me then I will let you know where I got it done.

Not sure if its ok to post the details here.

It is a pain alright and usually the starter going is a sign of flywheel problems. If there is a rattle when depressing the cluth pedal when in neutral than thats an indisctor too.
