A few years ago the finish line was moved down Upper Glen Road a bit so you now have a few hundred metres of downhill after the climb out of Furry Glen.

Balls, I hoped it was going to be mostly flat! No chance of breaking 40 minutes now.

It is mostly flat, in fact it is a downhill course overall. There is just one little hill that lasts about 200m at around the 4.5k mark and then it is straight downhill to the finish after that.

    +1.
If you run as far as the hill you should be fine for sub-40, even if you have to walk up it. But you could surprise yourself on the day! Just don't go out too fast...

Godamn 5ks, I hate them. Tougher than the marathon. That hill coming out of the lower glen is a bitch.

Is there anywhere to park near the clubhouse? Public transport seems a bit inconvient for me but not completely impossible. And by somewhere to park, I mean is there a decent chance I will get a park that morning.

You could drive into the park, park at the side of the road. That's what we (and plenty of others) did last year.
I'm thinking of driving up the evening before and getting my number then, then parking at the cross car park on the day.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,199 ✭✭✭G-Money

Yeah I might drive over Friday evening to pick up my number myself to do a bit of reconnaisance. I live in South county Dublin so not too far, but from the looks of it, I'd have to take at least 2 buses to get there if I wanted to go the public transport route. From the looks of it, it's easy enough got to from the M50...

damn number pick up is a right pain

Discrimination against people who dont drive I tell's ya

Why? You can pick up the number on the morning of the race and then it's just a short walk/jog to the start line...

Plenty of busses from the city centre will drop you right at Donore's clubhouse. 25,26,66, could be a 67 there all from Pearse St

Anyone driving could get maybe park up at the West County Hotel, in Chapelizod, would be about 10 minute jog down to the clubhouse.

You're best bet is to cycle in, saves a lot of hassle. Plenty of places to lock the rothar in the park. Failing that, the luas will leave you at huston which is pretty close.

+1 on cycling, its further than you think from heuston to the chapelizod gate.

Last year I parked at the junction of Lower Glen Road and Upper Glen Road.
I have a short jog to the start and short walk from the finish.

I just tried the online entry. I wanted to enter aero junior - he's 16. There seems to be two categories, 15 and under or latest DOB 31/12/91. Anyone know if I can enter him on the day, or am I doing something wrong?

Prob best to contact the organisers directly - the race might be full come race day.

Signed up yesterday, looking forward to it, enjoyed the first 4.5k of it last year until the glen. Some nice cake after too.

gf signed me up to this one too. I'm too fat and too slow at the moment so will have to see... my 5k pb is ****e (have run quicker of the bike) so I might give it a go.

I was wondering about this as I looked at the results from last year but the slowest time was 38minutes - that's a fairly fast walk around 5k!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭hollypink

I was wondering about that too - there were definitely lots of walkers last year. I don't think there was chip timing last year irrc so maybe they stopped noting numbers at the finish at 38 minutes?

No there wasn't any chip timing last year, never has been(as far as I know). So I'd say 38mins wouldve been the last of the runners.

    Hi guys,
i'm am running this along with the missus. I want to try and get sub 22 mins for this run. Looks like there will be 1,000+ runners. Did those who ran this last year find that they were slowed up by slower runners and walkers or is there plenty of room in the park. Have never ran in phoenix park so not sure how much space.

I normally like to start near the back and pass people as i run. Am thinking that i may get slowed up quite a bit with such a big crowd running.
    What do experience runners think.

The course is fast and it is chip timed this year. If you start well back and assuming the course is the same as last year, you will probably get slowed up over the first half k as the road at the start is quite narrow. After that it clears out quite a bit and the road widens when you hit the Furze rd.

If you start far enough up the field as your finishing time deems appropriate you should have no real problems.

Thanks Menoscemo. Think' i'll start about half way, avoid some of walkers and maybe may still get to pass the odd person.

    Thanks again.

I'd start further up than halfway if I were you, that first k is pretty slow otherwise.
Last year, there were about 400 people finishing under 23 minutes and nearly a thousand people slower than that. It'll probably be about the same this year.

    Thanks Raycun

i'll probably start higher up so. OH is running too - aiming for about 27 - 28 mins and i was going to hang back at the start with her. Think i'll have to dump her. Everyman for themselves......

Actually registered for this the other day after aero reminded me I should be running it! 3 years since I last did a 5k, this one in 2007(still have my mug) took me 26 minutes so this is a PB guaranteed!

Not sure why though, I didn't enjoy a second of it in 2007...

On race day, can you just go to the start line assuming you have your number and chip or do you need to go to Donore Harriers anyway first? I'm thinking of collecting my number on Friday afternoon so I'm just wondering about Saturday morning if it's a case of just showing up at the start line?

ChampionChip Ireland are timing the event this year, I called down with the chips this week and Dave showed me the route start and finish. Plan is to have mats at the start so we can produce finish times that show official time taken from the gun shot and also chip time once you cross the start mats. So unless you plan to be at the sharp end looking for a prize then hang fire and run at the back where the crowd is thinner.

Should be a good race with a massive crowd expected and some belter of a finish run in down the slope.

Will this race go ahead if we still have snow and ice next Saturday? It's nice of the weather to throw a spanner in the works

Let's hope all the snow and ice is gone by then. If it's like this (or worse) this time next week, I definitely won't be going anywhere.
