How do you claim section 23 tax relief.

    Hi,

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, mods can move if necessary. It's probably been asked a hundred times before, I did a search but couldn't find anything.

Basically, I am an owner occupier of a section 23 home. I just want to know what forms I need and where to get them in order to claim the allowed tax relief.

I've been told i need a 'blue department of the environment form'. Nobody seems to know the name of it or where I can get it though. I've also been told I need a statement of costs from the builders, this might prove difficult as they have gone bust and haven't been seen for a while. Is there another option if I can't get hold of them? Is it possible to claim without this statement? I was also told that someone needs to inspect the house, to make sure it ticks all the boxes to qualify for the tax relief, however I can't seem to find out who carries out the inspection or how to arrange one.

The solicitor I used to look after the sale, has been pretty unhelpful to be honest. Maybe he's tired of chasing the builders on other peoples behalf.

Anyway, any help would be much appreciated.

Actually this should probably be in the taxation forum, would somebody mind moving it (or can I?). Thanks.
