Off the top of my head, the HP Envy 14 has excellent audio fidelity, making it ideal for music production.
There is a "beats" edition aimed at music production, but its a gimmick as the only differences over the standard Envy are the paint job, backlit keyboard and free headphones. The standard envy still contains beat sound card technology for excellent audio.

At 14 inch its very portable and has ~5 hour battery life. Spec wise its as high as you are going to get in 14inch.

For your needs Id aim for
    • i5 - 450M or 460M CPU + (i7 probably overkill for your needs atm)
    • 4GB RAM (Upgradable to 8GB)
    • Infinity LED display ( the radience display is FUll HD and pretty awesome but now very hard to find and at a premium price, id advise it more if you were doing alot of GPU work, video editing etc)
    • HD 5650 GPU
    • 500-640gb 7200rpm HDD (music files take up alot of space)

The envy 15 and 17 offer similar, more powerful alternatives but i feel the form factor and cooling of the 14 wins out. HP 15 available in Currys iirc, go in and try it out!

Alternatively, Its hard to avoid macbook pro for the sheer advantages of Snow Leopard OS for certain programs such as Garage Band.

mac - my first thought as well - my mate is a musician who has been using computers, samplers etc for years . he first started out on a laptop, then a desktop for home production and bought a mac there about 4 years ago - gradually all his work is moving onto the mac . he says there is no comparison.

yeah, I imagine you can get a MacBook Pro for about 1200 and some software for the remaining cash. Mac's are great, but are different to Windows OS. Somethings are really annoying about them, but the MacBook Pro hardware is gorgeous.

Have a look at the refurbs here, any of those mc book pro's should be ok, maybe one with a 15 screen but the 13 is very portable http://store.apple.com/ie/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=OTY2ODY3Nw
