Servicing a Diesel

    I have had petrol engine cars all my life and have always serviced them myself. I recently got my first diesel and was wondering is there anything different to look out for servicing a diesel or is it just the usual filters and oil. It's a focus 1.8tdci.

    Main thing is after changing the diesel filter there may be a priming procedure, be it through a bulb or by self priming through cranking. Model specific but some can be a nightmare to get going. Filling the new filter with diesel is a must really. Other than than that it's same as a petrol for mini services.

    If you can service a petrol car yourself, you'll be able to service a diesel, the focus isnt overly advanced or complicated, good old crude simple ford, so it's dead easy to work on once you're half handy with a spanner.

    Haynes Manuals aren't all their cracked up to be.

    I.E. Did a service on my Volvo 2.0D V50 part way through it says skip to section X, then there it said "With Volvo Specialised tool part no XXX" bleed fuelline" ..

    FFS .. made one by reversing the valve in a bicycle pump .. but it was the most stupid design ever, having to remove the fuel pump should not be necessary for an oil change !!!.

    Damned Haynes manual could have outlined the tools and sizes first as well.
