NCT retest on emissions

    Hi all,

I have my NCT retest tomorrow night. Failed originally a couple of weeks back on my CO emissions being 0.56% (not a clue what this means to be honest!) when the limit is 0.30%.

I brought it to a local mechanic and he recommended that i get a new cat converter, which would have been costly enough. However, i called a friend of mine just before i went ordering the cat, and he said to hold off and that he'd have a look at it. So he changed the air filter and put some stuff into my petrol tank. I went to the garage where he works last Friday then to get the emissions measured and they only went to 0.24% after he revved the **** outta the car for a few mins. As far as i know the NCT testers only rev it a couple of times or is this wrong? So he told me to drive it hard to the test centre (high revs in low gears) and it "should" pass. Doesn't really inspire me in confidence to be honest!

    Any advice??

lucky you. ive been on this forum banging on about how i got charged over 600 euro for this cat converter job and a few other jobs to pass the nct after a similar fail. It did pass on the emissions and since then Ive put on a new backbox another 160 euro, she is due in again any day now. Its tyres this time I reckon.
Anyone know where I can get decent 145/80/12 s for less than thirty each?

He probably put dipetane (sp?) in the petrol tank and to run that through the engine you need to drive at higher revs. I used the same stuff to get a car through and just drove it like a prick on the way to the test and it passed.

In a situation like yours, where you are reasonably close to the limit, the thrashing the nuts off it before you get to the test centre is the best and cheapest approach!

Changing the cat for emissions like that is crazy IMO. You may well need a new cat the next time but worry about that in two years time:)!

You don't have to drive like a lunatic on the way to the nct centre. Just drive normal and change gear later than normal which equates to high revs. Then leave the engine running when you park at the test lane - keeps the engine and cat nice and toasty for the test.

Don't thrash the car until it's fully warmed up(around 10 minutes after it's been started from cold) either, that will not do the longevity of the car any favours!
