    Hi all,
Have a question about audi longlife service.
I have an audi a3 1.6l petrol and its due a service, it has been on long life services from audi.
Was hoping to get an independant mechanic to service it closer to myself but when i spoke to a guy who regularly deals in audis he said that longlife petrol engines is tricky and that i should go to audi [he basically turned down a job].....is he right...should i go back to audi??

As far as I know they just use longlife oil, no difference from a normal service. They might replace brake pads and anything else they don't see lasting until the next service but other than that it's standard.

yeah thats what i thought too....but this guy is fairly reliable, and he brings in a lot of audis from the UK...i wondered if i was missing something...like an awkward filter situation or something....especially if he was turning business away to  a main dealer!!!!!

Hi trilobite80, I've moved your posts to a new thread as the one you posted in was quite old :)

It's my undersdanding as well that it's really just the long life oil and making sure that brake pads/disks will last until the next service.

The long life service can't be set using the instrument panel as per the normal service interval of 15k kms. VAGCOM ior similar computer s required to set up long life service, but most independs should have the facility to do that. Mine does.

It's just a standard service using longlife oil. A lot of the good synthetic oils out there will be longlife certified anyway so it could actually be no different from a standard service. I put shell helix ultra extra (or something like that) in the golf last time. Spec is VW 504 / 507 so its a longlife oil but ill change it after 10k anyway (but that's just me).

It was a bit of an odd response from the mechanic. Unless he didn't hav vagcom or the likes to reset the interval...

yep thats what i thought and he even said he had the computer bits for it but he said he thought i had a diesel, and when i told him it was petrol he changed his tune.

It'd be interesting to know what extra is involved.

I cant see anything being the problem. You could service that yourself op if you wanted. Your mechanic sounds odd if you dont mind me saying so.

The only problem the mechanic could have is that he doesnt have VAGCOM to reset your interval. If that is the case though he wouldnt have been able to do a diesel one either.
Longlife is same service but better oil, ensuring all components have at least 30k km left in them. Im not sure if you get a new air filter ever time on longlife or not but your service book will tell you the mileage interval for that.
Sounds like he hasnt a clue what he is on about to be honest.
Maybe he had a bad experience on a petrol one before that had been set to fixed intervals and got dogs abuse from customer when the car kept looking for oil change at 15k km.

I don't give a feck what any manufacturer says, all cars need an oil change more regular than 20k or whatever. For the sake of €60 I would be getting the oil changed after 10k max.

It's just a ploy to help them sell more fleet cars IMO.

Its a fair point and seeing as the OP is not paying dealer prices, he could get 2 oil changes now for the price of the dealer longlife service. There can be no doubt that his car is better served with oil change every 10k miles.
I will be doing my own at 10k miles too even though it is on longlife which is showing about 17k miles between services. I have VAGCOM & doing it myself with top quality oil, genuine oil filter and air filter costs about €100.

Maybe you have a point there...well fingers crossed anyway, its better than forking a wad of cash to audi for a similar job!
