The head gasket went in my girlfriends car today. The first 2 cylinders arent firing/compressing and it needs to be skimmed. Theres not many clean panels left on it either.

Would the best idea be to just cut our losses now and buy something new or would it be worth anything at all as a tradein?

ya, cut your losses, mine went twice same with a buddies. About €600 a go as far as i can remember. Theres some great deals and bargaining to be done out there with all the repos around. Sorry if this is bad news but I think its the best advice. Punto was the worst car I ever had. Something goes wrong every month or two in my experience

I wouldnt mind but its been a great little car since she got it. I kinda had the urge to go car shopping so all is not lost :D

Would it be any use even trying to sell it for 100-200 euro?

Someone who needs other parts might buy it for that; the most valuable bits are the engine if its not gone; and if its a Mk2, the ECU core and the electric power steering motor as they can be rebuilt for other cars that have destroyed ones.

To be honest dude it's a punto, and it's now dead so it's worth feck all as a trade in. Yes someone might buy it for 100-200 for parts but maybe not if it's battered. In most cases it will be a 500-700 job to fix, and if compression is gone then than aint a great sign. Just try to find her something in good shape that's known to be reliable, they dont get a good rep for nothing, same gos for fiats up until recently, but in reverse, people think they're crap because they are actually crap. Yeah at the end of the day a car's a car if it gets you from a to b, but dull as ditchwater but ridiculously reliable corolla for example (or anything bland japanese and super reliable) will get you from more As to Bs for a lot longer. Diesel VW will also do it, slowly, but very cheaply and very reliably. you dont see all those massive mileage diesel golfs and ventos still around for nothing
