Child benifit should be abolished in the budget, to compensate give people with kids on welfare an extra few euro per child per week, give more low and middle pay workers with kids family income supplement, give more middle income familys back to school clothing allowance and medical card. Total Saving at least 800 million.

I think this proposal would actually cost more than 800 million! The medical card is a massive benefit...most families would jump at a medical card in exchange for the children's allowance, such is its value.

The whole tax/benefit structure needs simplifying and streamlining however. A flat tax of 15% on all earnings, no tax credits, no tax free allowances, no child benefit. For those on welfare...one benefit payment, dependent on your circumstances. All those separate payments mean more overhead (how many separate agencies do we have doing means tests??) and a much increased possibility of benefit fraud.

    Simplify the whole thing.

child benefit for a family with 2 kids is €3600 a year. You might be able to cancel or reduce your health insurance if you had a medical card, but I'm still not sure the tradeoff would be worth it unless you had some serious illness in the family.

Paying for child care for 2 kids is up to 20K per year.

Does a medical card cover child care?
