    hi all,
Just wondering if someone can help me out as I do not know much on the matter

i had a root canal done 4yrs ago but last week the gum above my tooth was sore, so made an app to see the dentist, he said that there was an infection and he put me on antibiotics to see if it clears. after 6 days of tablets, my gum is not as sore as it was but something is still there. they told me that they will have to do the root canal again and that it will cost me €450 (which i dont have at the moment) or i can get it out. do you think i should have to pay? when i got it done, i was told that it would last but it hasn't and i also wasn't told about getting a crown on it either. my aunt was a dental nurse a few years back and she said that it should last. she has two done for 21years!!
any help will be greatly appreciated
    thanks

It should last but only if the tooth is well sealed. If you were told to have a crown but decided against it its your fault. The dentist will have notes on this. A lot can happen in 4 years, it may not be the dentists fault entirely. Depends.....often best see a endodontist a specialist in root canal . I do see your point though

ya i wasnt told about a crown. the dentist last week was the first person to mention it. it was a different dentist a few years ago that did it. this dentist is really nice and said to help me out, that he will go splits with me so i would only have to pay half.

Well if it not even the dentist that did the job then thats a really sound offer you were made.

So he'll charge you €225. More reasonable isn't it. Wonder if even after that 50% reduction whether he's still making a profit, my guess is that he is. Just goes to show the size of the profits Irish dentists make. Nothing wrong with making a profit of course, it's just how large should that profit margain be?

It's upto you of course. I think €225 here would be similar to NI prices. Best of luck with it anyway. By the way, it'd cost from €25 to €55 in Ukraine but then you have to factor in travel and hotel/apartment. Wouldn't make much sense going to Ukraine simply for one root canal - would make sense if you had quite a bit of dental work that needed to be done. It's not lower quality work it's just that you're paying local prices.

That's...pretty unusual... I'd consider getting a second opinion if I was you.

I think the point well proven here, is that its getting in done properly that counts. The extra money of a specialist the first time would work out cheaper in the long run. Its not all about price per item, its quality of service for a price.

thanks for your advice everyone. i think im just going to go and get it done. at this time, half price is better than nothing! :)
