Buying a Macbook Pro in America

Hi, just wondering if anyone has any experience/advice about buying a Macbook in the states. The savings are pretty hefty but I'm worried I'll get caught for tax on the way back.

A friend is going to NY at the end of the month, can I order it beforehand and have him collect it or does he have to buy it over there?

    Thanks

Get him to take it out of the box, turn it on and go through the setup and dump the box. That way customs will have a bitch of a time proving it was bought there.

If he brought it on as hand luggage would they check it?

Telling people how to aviod tax by making the laptop look like it was bought in Ireland, as opposed to the USA, may be against charter rules.
